Well yes, if your dampener has shifted.
If you have a 383, take a stroll to the strip. Start at 30* and work your way up 2* at a time. When you don't do anybetter than the last, go 2 more. Still no improvment, go back to the least timing with the best run. Your in.

It has a lot to do with how good the combustion chamber is and the fuel you are using. My 383 injected on alcohol loved 40 degrees of timing, when it was on gas with carbs, it liked 36 degrees better.

Alcohol burns slow. You need a lot of timing on alcohol.

Under 10:1 compression, flat top piston on gas you'll should start at 34*, you can go up and down and anywhere you want but the optimum will be 34*.

I think there is some confusion when some people make statements in regard to timing. Some are referring to "total" as including vacuum advance and others are referring to initial and mechanical only. Makes a lot of difference!

Yeah, and it had a little black thingy that went from it to the carbonizer. My pickup has one also but the distribulator is on the front of the engine and the little black thingy runs the other direction! :-)
