74 SCAMP engine swap or not
I have a 74 scamp that has a nice slant six with a clifford 4 brl and header I can't decide if I should keep the six and build it or put in a built 318 with a 518 tran. I have access to a nice military 318 thats propane now and it only has 50000 miles on it. I also can get a A535 5 speed trans I have beeen told that this will bolt up to the 318 as it's bolted to a 3.9 v6 now.I have also learned that it may also be adaptable to the slant six. I have a 83/4 inch rear 323 gears and the V8 crossmember already but I can't decide what to do what do you think? thanks B.S.C

The 518 tranny wont fit the car. It is too wide and mounts at a diferent place. The only way to make it fit is to cut the frame in the tranny tunnel area and that will weaken the partail unibody chassis. Even with subframe connectors with a hot engine it would be possible to bend the chassis and wrinkle the quarters too. You need an A 904 or A 727 tranny to put the 318 in there.

the tranny will NOT bolt up to the leaning tower of power. It will bolt to the 318.

518 trans
I thought one of the mopar mags did a article on how to put a 518 in (what modes had to be done to keep the strutural integrity of the car) And to Ed_Mopar or any one else who knows would the A535 trans hold up to a built 318 300-400 horse

I have no idea if it would hold up. I was kind enough to scan in the article series and put it in the archives. I would never do such a swap.
I would go with the Gear Vendor OD (for automatic) or the Keisler 5-speed setup. |
