Question Shortie Spark Plugs?

I am tired or wrecking my hands with the #3 and #6 plugs on my 71 Bee.

Who makes the shortie plugs NGK or Autollite?

I was following your thread in hopes of an answer also. I read an article about Hooker Super Comp headers in which they had to use a shorty on #1. It fit on my car, but looks pretty close (probably will burn). I'll see if I can find the article and hook us both up, but you'll have to give me a couple of days.

Later,

Greg

Autolite makes short plugs in their racing series plug. I don't know if this is what your looking for or not.

If I wanted short plugs the first place I would go is to the speed shop. They have all the books. I don't. If I'd read about something over the last 30 years, do you think I'd really be able to find it in all the magazines around here? That is the business of the speed shop. To get you that sort of item. Ok?

Amx,

I am not trying to be sarcastic it is just that you have to understand that most of the speed shops around here cater to 4 cylinder FWD cars with fart pipes and huge wings that ensure downforce on the rear end, or they are amazed when I tell them that that I have a standard bore 383 big block, not a stroked 350!

So I was trying to jar anyone's memory and speak to someone who knows Mopars and has actually used these plugs.

Thanks atoetly I will check out Autolite then.

I know that on my brother's Chevy Monza, we had to use Champion plugs because the steering column passed in the way of the plug hole. The Champions had the shortest overall length of all the plugs we tried. This is a tapered seat 5/8 hex design, not a BBM plug.

On my 273 with fenderwell headers, I can use long plugs. I even use a 28" 3/8 drive extension to remove all 8 plugs!!! I Never get my hands close to the hot headers. Them Chevy guys might outrun me on the track, but I can pull my plugs faster than they can!

71383bee,
there was someone that said they used shorty plugs on a thread about headers and i need one too for my number 1 cylinder and i have asked at several auto parts stores and got nothing.
i have eddy heads with super comp headers and my spark plug is the 14mm 3/4 lenth. so if you, by some miracle find them, find one for me too.

Accel makes the shorty header plugs and they come in 8 packs most of the time.

I read a couple post on here just wanted to get the plug away to keep from burning the wire on the headers. DEI makes a sock sold in pairs or 8 pack. Goes over the boot and about 8 inches of wire. On my small block race engines on 5 and 7 both socks sit right on the header tube and has never burned through or damaged the wire. My headers are wrapped too so that also helps too along with the header coating. Just wanted to let you know these are out there and work. Summit Raving sells them.

The problem is not the heat, it is the limited space. I need a double jointed wrist to get in between the header tube and the fender wall to remove the plug on the #6 cylinder and for the #3 the plug is directly in line with the power steering hose. Just plugging the wires on is a hassle. I think that a shorted plug will give me a little more room to manuever a socket in there without the need for swivels and give my e a better shot at putting on my plug wires.

Are Accell plugs decent plugs? If they don't foul easilly then that may be what i need.

I tried Accel plugs on a race engine one time. You know how to read a plug and the color it should be when the carbs jetted right. After installing those plugs, they were always a dark black color. No matter what we did to the carb. And I mean all of them were that way. Went back to my Champion race plugs and jetted to carb and got the right color back.

Do a search on Champions site. I'd bet money they have a short plug since they are the leader in the plug bussines and make all the race plugs.

i have looked around, and even emailed mancini racing about the short plugs. unfortunately, accel is the ONLY maker of short plugs for mopar big blocks. i suspect there are some out there somewhere, but i sure cant find any way to cross reference them, not even on manufacturer's web sites... and some of them are pretty comprehensive. accel #8197 is what you are looking for, a set of 8 cost me about $25. they are only about 1/4" shorter than champions, but they help header clearance problems.

I know that the Champions are shorter than other brand plugs.
On my 440 ( in a 68 barracuda) the rt front plug has to be tightened with a wrench if I use AC's because if I use a socket/ratchet theres not enough room to back it all the way out. No such problem with the Champions.
This might help also: I used to use a swivel adapter on some of the tighter plugs. they were from Direct Connection ( tellin' my age) but Im pretty sure they were made by Taylor. I think Moroso sells them too. They never burned even though they were touching the headers. They were made of a hard plastic on the outside.
