Default 8.75" assembly

Quick question.. The foam gasket goes between the housing flange and the backing plate.. and the thing metal "gasket" goes between the backing plate and the axle flange?

Ok, there is the flange on the axle housing. put on the metel gasket/shim, put on the foam gasket, put on the backing plate. Put in the axle. Tighten down the bearing retaining flange on the axle to the housing studs.

End play. put a dial indicator on the left axle set at zero. snug the adjuster on the right axle. Go to the left axle and push in and pull out watching the indicator. It should read between .005 and .010. for the end play. You'll probably have to go back and forth from one side to the other till it's correct.

Tighten the lock on the right side adjuster ring. Check your repair manual for whatever car you are doing. Don't have a manual? Get one. They help a lot. It will show how to set up the dial indicator to get the proper reading.

Hope I didn't forget anything.

I gotta remember which side of the backing plate the foam always sticks to! If I was at home I could go look.

The embossed metal gasket goes between the backing plate and the housing flange, the foam gasket goes between the backing plate and the axle retainer.

The axle end play is shared by both axles, the center thrust block floats, so whatever it is one side, it will be on the other.

The easiest way to set the axle end play is to tighten the adjuster slowly until all the end play is removed and then back the adjuster off 4 notches and install the lock tab. While tightening the adjuster to remove the end play, occasionally smack the axle with a soft hammer to seat the bearing races.
