Exclamation

According to todays Detroit Free Press, DC has scraped plans to build a Jeep (code named "SJ") to compete with the Ford Motor Co.'s Excursion and General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet Suburban.

The project was killed " . . . over concerns about corporate fuel economy requirements, rising gas prices, and the vehicle's pricing . . . "

The vehicle's price tag, which was in the mid-$50,000 range, much too high to compete successfully against the likes of the Excursion with a base price under $40,000.

Can you image paying in the mid to upper 50's for a Jeep (well optioned ???) I can't.

That is correct. However, and this is according to the car and truck site, the big SUV will be built and it will be a Dodge. And at a cheaper price than the proposed Jeep.

Question

Will they ever come out with a 4 door Dodge? We are a family of 5 and I for one would like to see the 4 door back. Never mind it would be out of my price range any how. I cant see having a vehicle payment that is more than my house payment. I will go back to my original idea does any one know of an 80's 4 door dodge for sale body in good shape may need mechanicall work ??

let me know!

thanx

You may want to check out the classified ads in publications like Hemmings Motor News or go to http://www.traderonline.com/ and you can do a search there.

Obviously chrysler has no clue what we want. I would by one of these in a second. I love my Ram truck but it would be so much nicer to take one vehicle to the track insead of 2 because of my family.

I live in Texas and actually saw someone who went throught the hassle to get a NEW Ramcharger from Mexico and get it registered in Texas. I was next to it, and didn't get a chance to ask the owner any questions, but it looked like it's based off of the 2500 Ram, as it had a V10 and 4 doors. Unfortunately, I've also heard that the fuel economy is awful.

good news... the word is that there is going to be a crew cab offered for the next gen. ram. i've seen a few truck conversions over the last couple of years, one in 4 wheeler in 1996. it was actually called an adventurer convertion. basically it looked like a suburban with a ram front end. it had the proper dodge tailights, rear fender styling, and door handles. the glass area and roof and all looks just like a suburban. also somewhere on the net, i can't remember there was a guy who had a ram shortbed converted to a ramcharger. some company took them new and did it. i'll try to find the page or company name...

Strange as it may seen, I work for one of the major retailers in the world and we think we should sell people what THEY want, not what WE think they want. No wonder business is good! Just a thought. John RT/SE

I fear that by the time DC makes one the market will have been long dead or withering away. SUV sales are down something like 50%. And if gas prices go up more....SUV's are this generations Musclecars. And we are lookin like its 1973!!!

Hey guys - I realize Chrysler has no crew cabs, no $20,000 Camaro eaters, no this no that.
BUT - we do have Vipers. Prowlers. Intrepids. Cummins Turbo Diesels. Dakotas. 300Ms.Soon to be PT Cruisers. Lots of really great stuff in a time when new cars are mostly BORING.
$30,000 to $40,000 is expensive. Too expensive. I wish Mother MoPar would get the prices down AND find a way to finance the little guy. It's no use making HOT product when nobody in middle class America can afford it.
Even the parts. My buddy across the street is chev-boy. He buys a ZZ502 for $7500 Canadian. I'm looking at twice that for a comparable MoPar crate engine. Mind you, I could put together an engine with more HP for about 1/3 the price. The problem is NEW parts prices,NEW car prices.
I wish DaimlerChrysler would have an old fashioned SUGGESTION BOX. One that they would listen to, not just empty. What a difference that could make!

Marc i agree that the Prowler and Viper are reasons for us, the mopar initiated, to hold our heads up high! Much higer than we could during the 70's or 80's (the Dark Ages as far as Im concerned).
I am happy for all those things.

nothing wrong with the dakota... but some of us need a little more than a 5 foot bed, and also need the towing capacity of a fullsize, and be able to carry the whole fam with no problem.
