Question Amperage Draw on lightweight Starter

Just purchased lightweight starter and put on '69 Runner that has stock 383 motor. Turned engine over and the thing whined before engine kicked over. Took off starter and had a free running amperage draw of 110 amps. Two questions. Is it normal for these lightweight starters to whine while cranking over motor and does anyone know what the free running amp draw should be on this starter? 110 amps seems a bit high to me for a new starter. Unit is a Denso p/n TN128000-7812 and the unit has a Chrysler tag on it with a number of P4510049. Thanks.

They have a whine or whirl to them. Not sure what the free running amp draw is though.

Thanks '43. Reason I'm curious as to amp draw is that a gear reduction starter as listed in my '69 RR shop manual calls for a free running amp draw of 90 amps, but I know this is not the same starter that I am dealing with right now.

You know these have a 4.4:1 reduction ratio. That's why they sing more, plus the are a performance starter and turn with much more power and torque. So they should draw more amps.

Got me to wondering, so I checked. TIlton shows a 250 amp draw on there race starter, and a Summit starter shows a 90 amp draw. That's all I could find. So you are in between so I'd say it's o.k. for 110 amps.
