Default 383 into a 451??????

now that the 440 has been dropped off at the machine shop my thoughts turn to the next project to save for???

Since I'll have an extra 440 cast crank and a 383 block I'm thinking of a 451 or 470 stroker..for my one ton

I know the 451 ussually uses the 400 block but I should be able to use the 383 just with a bigger bore job right?? it is a 66 block from a chrysler windsor.

any thoughts???????

Thanx

Blygy

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you will get that many cubes out of a 383. The 400 had the largest bore of the bigblocks. If I remember right the common size for a 383 stroker is 426.

A .060" over 383 with a 3.75" crank will get you 437.7 cubic inches. I don't think you want to bore it any further than that.

So the 383 and 400 blocks are not the same.. I guess I just assumed they were just a different bore..

of course as the wife loves to repeat back to me "when u assume u make an ASS out of U and ME"

thanx guys.. might still do a 431 though... now the brains gotta work it out..

It still makes a good stroker.

You get a 426 wedge engine,(overbored to 431) in a smaller package.

There was a recent build up of this combo in hot rod. The guy got some really good numbers.

I believe the article was called 10 proven engine combo's. It had combo's from all brands. He told the authors it was a 383 at first, but they got suspicious when he got over 400 wheel horsepower from the engine.

It may have been a car craft article.

Email me at the shop if you want me to try and find it for you. I can fax the pages

It is possible to get 450 ci out of a 383 by using a 440 crank & offset machining the con rod journals using the Chevy big block smaller journal size rod that Manley sells to suit the Mopar piston pin, it's 6.765 inch length & part number PN14279.

Think it works out you end up with a 3.92 inch stroke approx, with a 0.030 overbore, I get the 450 ci from memory, don't have the calculator on me desk.

Default Stroke It!

What kind of pistons would you use and where can they be found?

That's a good question!

Too bad these articles aren't a little more in depth.

I'll dig around a bit.

He could be using a stock lo-po piston for a 383, with a bit milled off of it.

Anybody else know?

Fast one was pretty close, the common stroke from the offset grind to 2.2" ( chevvy) is 3.915". With a 6.765" (std 440 length) rod you would need a piston with a comp. hgt. (CD) of 1.255" in a stock hgt. block (9.98") for 0" deck hgt. The piston Ross offers for a 400 with the same crank and rod setup shows a CD of 1.238" so this could be easily done by Ross, JE, etc. but would be a "custom made" which can be read as expensive. Guessing $600 or better.
