Help Torque Convertor Question

Ok, 1st of all I want to thank all you guys out there for all the very helpful info I have found on this site. Now, is it possible for a TQ to go bad and not allow an engine to idle in gear? I can get my car to idle just fine in nuetral or park, but as soon as I put it in gear in bogs down and dies. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure tis out, but no luck. Its a Transmission Specialties 10" convertor, I think the stall was around 2500-3000. Trans is a 727, motor is slightly built 383. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen several t-converters lower in stall speed and cause a condition you are describing.
But a vacuum leak/ tuning problem can cause it too.

before i got my cable kickdown kit from year one, we had my kickdown lever ni-tied back almost all the way... this caused the same condition you described, and it caused terrible preignition when i tried to powerbrake. also, the weights were wrong too and added to that, but still...it really JUMPED into gear, and almost killed it...

you could check your kickdown linkage, it my be stuck, or catching someplace... the TQ could also verywell be bad...

just my $.02...

good luck!

TQ is a ThermoQuad carb.
TC is a torque converter.

If the sprag in the converter fails, there will be no stall speed and it will stall the motor when placing the trans in gear.
As mentioned earlier, a motor in poor tune will also die when placed in gear. To eliminate the converter as the cause, try braking with your left foot and throttling with your right foot to see if you can keep the motor running when in gear.

Thanks John, tried what you said and it keeps on running as long as I can keep above 1000 rpms in gear. Must not be the TQ, oops, I mean TC .
