Default cheap mufflers

I thought I'd share this with you guys. I had been running a set of inexpensive Dynomax wannabe, mufflers on the adventurer.

I used real dynomax on the van, and they worked great.

These things had a really crappy blAAAAAAAAAP sound to them, when I stomped on it. Finally I got sick of it, and decided to go with a different cheap muffler(yes I'm cheap, and I'm not going to buy flowmasters)

I put on a set of "shuttleworth" mufflers. They are a all arc welded design(no seams) and are quite large.

27"in the body, 6 inches round(not oval) and cost about $45 canadian each($30 usd)

I had questioned the flow of the wannabe's because they sounded like the exhaust was really being forced out. They were much smaller, maybe 18" body, oval.

Both sets were 2 1/2" in and out

The verdict is in, these "shuttleworth" mufflers kick a$$. They sound great (nice deep rumble, not the crappy BLAAAAAAP) were cheap, and I have noticed a dramatic performance improvement. Performance seen in the nhigher rev areas. Definately pulls harder.

I've theoerized, that the small muffler wasn't allowing enough expansion. They were very close to the header (24") The larger, round muffler, allows for more expansion, of the still burning gases.

More area(the size difference) for expansion, and more direction (round, not oval allows 360 deg expansion, instead of just to the sides)

Just my theory, I don't know it holds much water, but I'm sticking to it.

Default Where did you pick them up?

I'm looking at getting new mufflers and might check these out.

Thanks!

I use stock Midas on the Van-warmed up 360. and it works and sounds good. The AMX has Pro Flows or is that Flow Pros? 2 1/2 ". anyway they sound great, without the excessive noise of the Flowmasters I've heard. But I don't know if they were 2 or 3 chamber Flowmasters.

I got them from a local warehouse called Grand Prix. They are part of a group of distributors called Allied distributors.

I would think a local supplier like Bumper to Bumper(Acklands Gainger) would be able to get them as well. They are typically a truck muffler.

I actually have a bunch of them (in 3") instock.

The problem is, I don't know if they will fit under a car. Probably, but thier size may become an issue.

The 2 1/2" I put on have a smaller body, and would probalby work on most of the bigger cars. Would hang too low on a A body with small tiress, ect.

I sent some info on my van, for the club. Not that my van is fancy or anything, it's a tradesman, long wheelbase. But it's been a good one. I bought it in '82 from a flower shop that painted it an ugly green! Good thing I like green. It still is green.

And here's the cheap muffler in question.

It's about 6 inches across. (the pipes are 2 1/2")

Note, it has no seams, just welds.
