Angry 383 scored

well I got a 383 free tore it apart and found the #3 cyl scored. I know it realy needs to be sonic tested but on average how big can you bore a 383 1970 block? I havent measured it but it will probable need .060 or .070.

You're probably better off to plan to sleeve the bad hole, and do them all to .030.

If it looks that deep, then there is a pretty good chance you will have to, any way.

Thumbs up I agree.........

Yeah, if the gouge in the cylinder wall is bad sleeving that hole is an expensive option. But consider some other options. Do you have a line on a 383 block somewhere that could be gotten cheap? What about a 400? The crank would swap (if it is good) the only difference is the 400 has a larger bore. IF you were planning to bore the 383 you would be buying pistons anyway.
Don't let it get you down. When you run into a problem like this look for the opportunity to 'upgrade' that might possibly be a better combo anyway.

sleeving isnt expensive.... I checked on getting my 511 sleeved. It was 125.00 and that included re honing the surrounding cylinders. He will spend more than that in gas getting a new one. I would go with 400 if a new one is the only option.

generally speaking, .060" is the absolute maximum you can bore a cylinder without sleeving it. even .060" is getting real thin on the cylinder walls. they are weak, and hot spots become a problem. go with the sleeve if you dont find another block. (sometimes you can find whole engines that run for $200 or so, i got a whole car for $75 with a running 400 in it! tranny was good, too, till i broke the rear sprag. ) if you do bore your block, make all the holes the same size, and expect to pay $100 to $150 or more a hole just for the machine work. $800 to $1200 for machining will pay for another block plus a LOT of other mods if the block is any good.

Default boring

dang, I thought I was high, for big and small blocks I only get 125.00 to bore and hone all 8 holes, to sleeve is just 50.00 for the first, plus cost of sleeve, I must need to raise my prices
for deisels I charge more, but then it is by the hour
