Smile Rebuilding my 440.

basically i am going to rebuild this engine for a back up right now the motor in my truck is getting up there in miles its got good compresson and the oil and other fluids have been changed on time but you never know, i will be putting my backup in the truck when it goes or when when it sounds like it is time. my truck is 350 royal es 1 ton single rear wheels basically i go four wheeling and haul a trailer, i know its not the best for going off road but you do what you can with what you have and it goes pretty good anyway getting back to my question, mytruck has a transplanted 440 in now and the backup i am going to rebuild is also a 440 but the question is i don't want to go crazy on the rebuild pretty much just have the block cleaned at a machine shop and the do the rest my self and keep it pretty stock but any info on parts or rebiuld kits or any tricks that can be done to get me through this or any not to exspesive mods i can have done, i have about 1500.00 dollars to do this with any help would be great . Thanks Mudfleapa

since i'm at skool ( ) i can't exactly yank out my P.A.W. book... but we got a master kit for my bro's 440 for about $2,000...i know it's more than $1,500 but it runs great!

the kit included:
Crank - cast
Cam - mild...don't remember specs (SSI Performance)
Pistons - forged 10:1
connecting rods (i think)
bearings - clevite77
gaskets - felpro
lifters - SSI Performance (matched to cam)
valvesprings - Matched to cam
pushrods (i think)

this engine is backed by a 727 - 3.56 8 3/4" rear with 275/60R 15 tires. it'll hit about 50 in first with about 6,000 rpms, and when it hits second the back end tries to pass the front as the speedo jumps to around 80!! for no more than we put into the engine, it flat hauls! i don't know if the prices are the same with P.A.W in these rebuild kits, but if you don't need the crank and rods, it'd more than likely be cheaper. i'll look at lunch and repost the prices i find.

good luck!

thanks 72roadrunner for the info thats one possibility but if i don't have to change the crank and rods i really don't want to but once i get in there and see what's up then i will make the choice, my truck also has the 727 behind it and the big 9 3/4 rearend, then thereis the choice of using the old intake and carb or buying a new intake and carb, any good combo's of new carb and intake for the motor would give me some choices also. Again thanks for the info will look forward for the specs. later mudfleapa

we have the stock cast MP1 (i think) dual plane with a Holley 650 Double Pumper on my bro's 440. course, i have an aluminum Edelbrock TorkerII single plane hi-rise with a Holley 650 DP (much older - top plate comes off instead of bowls hangin off the side) on my 340...

figures...i forgot to bring my PAW book too...i'll look at that sometime and give you prices of the possibilities. there is a kit that just has pistons, rings, and gaskets i think... i'll have to look.

I would go with the factory rebuild and replacement pistons, it will save money on balancing. Which will be done anytime other than replacements pistons are used. Take it .030 mill the heads .040 have them do a good valve job, with new springs. The stock valves will be planty. New cam lifters, somthing mild, use the match lifters. New timing set and oil pimp. Get a good used intake like a CHB Edelbrock or another duel plan type. A 750 Vacum secondary Holley duel line carb like the 1850 type. What year is the truck? Electronic ignition is a must. You should be within your budget. It will make planty of power, and last a long time. If you can afford more get some Kieth Black pistons and have it balanced. Over the stock pistons, should set you back another 200 Bones. I did mention that the block needs cleaned, new cam bearings and freeze plugs too.

headers is a must
don't go too large on the exhaust system
make sure you match your cam to a truck converter ie; 1600 stall
