440 Camshaft help! Which one?
I am currently planning a rebuild for my 440 Dart. I want to use one of these 3 camshafts. The Mopar 292- The purple shaft "509", the Comp Cams 292H or the Comp Cams 280H. The 440 will be mostly driven on the street, with the occasional 1/4 mile pass. The heads will remain stock(1973) with mild porting and the valvetrain will more than likely stay stock. It will have a Edelbrock 800 CFM, Edelbrock RPM manifold, Headers, and a B&M 2000 Holeshot converter. The pistons will be around 9.5 to 10 compression ratio for premium gas. Any suggestions or past experience with these cams. Thanks.

I can tell right now whats going to happen . Your going to get a bunch of guys telling you to use a real mopar cam like a Hughes or call racer brown , and they MIGHT be right . But you asked about 3 specific cams only , so here goes , in a 440 Dart the mopar 509 will work very well , the Comp 292 is ok but I would go with the 509 because of the tighter lobe centers 108 for the 509 and 110 for the comp 292 . The Comp 280 is not enough cam . Bill

Yep... Bil has been here long enough to know the way that we think.
Why run a cam that might be close to your application, when you can have one made by Racer Brown (for about $50 more) that is a perfect match for your application. |
