Default Need a tranny kickdown

Well, recently it's come to my attention that when changing a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel,, a new tranny kick down is needed for the swap. I was just curious on what kinda cars I would find this.

I swapped the 78 318 for a 78 360, the truck is a 52 Fargo, but hopefully that doesn't matter.

Can I grab a tranny kickdown off a ramcharger or something like that? Are they universal?

Probably the easiest thing to do is get a kickdown cable kit from lokar or bouchillon , they fit everything and make for a clean install. Bill

You can try Ebay For your kickdown. I searched long and hard before I decided to go with Bouchalon, but I am not sure I would recomend it. Seems to work good, but I posted a poll when I bought mine and people seemed to like the Lokar better. Something about it looks better, and is easier to adjust. I beleve there are two differnt kinds of factory kickdowns: three piece, and two piece. In my experence there were more two pieces. Naturally I needed the three piece. I hope this helps, and good luck with your hunt.

Kick down linkage can be easily found at any bone yard. Find the 3 piece linkage and get ALL parts from one car, brackets, springs, clips, linkage etc. Depending on your set up, I had to make the throttle cable bracket taller to work with the intake manifold i used. There might be some other minor fabrication work in getting it to all work with the carb on the car. The cable is kind of pricey when you can find all the linkage for under 20 bucks at the pick and pull.

As long as it is properly adjusted, the original kickdown should be fine. I have converted a few cars from 2-bbl to 4-bbl and have had no problems when retaining the existing kickdown.

Thumbs up Bouchillon Cable

plydus340,

Don't feel bad about that kit. i have the same kit and it works excellent. The lokar seemed like a universal cure all fit all for any type of transmission. The bouchillon was made by Mopar people for mopar users...besides no cutting or modifying and i think it looks way better than the stock set ups anyways.

If you got the room behind the motor, use the super common 1 piece kickdown bar, present in every other mopar you see at the yard. The only time you cant use this is if the motor buts right up against the firewall, or the trans has something in front of the kickdown. I got no sources for 3 piece setups, and Im in So. Cal, boneyard capital! I made a Lokar clone from a bike brake cable and two 3/8 rod couplers. Its not pretty, but Ill just keep my air cleaner on at the shows....

When simply going from a 2-barrel to a 4-barrel, all that needs to be changes is the upper rod or link.
The 2-barrel carb throttle lever is roughly centered on the intake manifold while the 4-barrel lever is further forward. Whatever the difference in distance is, the linkage needs to be lengthened that much either by fabricating a new link or extending the original.
Be sure the replacement carb (if not Mopar) has the correct Mopar throttle lever adapter.
