Default amp meter goin crazy

just bought a 71 Dart....used well...but not abused...got a problem with the amp meter goin from discharge to full 18 volt side after start up...also tends to fluctuate from discharge side to charge side at idle withe turn signal activated....can anybody give me a hand please....

Take it to your local Advance auto parts store and have them check your charging system for free. If it's not a regulator or alt. problem then it's the same ole common problem of those cheap gauges failing and since it has age now, I'd be willing to bet it's just that gauge.

thanks dwc...but i just hooked up a set of new mechanical guages...same problem....alternator and voltage regulator check out fine per local alternator shop...any other ideas...someone told me Mopar Muscle had posted a cure in it's Dec. 01 issue....as of yet i am unable to locate it....thanks for your help

You say the new gauges are bouncing too? If the alt and reg are o.k. and the new volt or amp ( you did not say which you got) are still bouncing I am at a lose for a cure. It is stock aint it? No under drive alt. pulley's or the likes?

Make sure regulator has a good gound to firewall and I add a braided grounding strap from the back of the head to one of the mounting bolts on the regulator. Clean the contacts in the regulator plug and I've had to crimp the loose connector contacts from the outside slightly to get better contact. My didn't jump, but my would chare than discharge and when I reseated the regulator plug it would charge again.
