Default For Anyone looking for a performance 318

I have been a member of the board for a while and lately i have been noticing an overwhelming number of people trying to get performance numbers from their 318's. I don't have much advice to offer the typical 67-89 318 owner, as all my vehicles started off as 318s and those engines all ended up at my engine builder's shop as core values (he gave me 40 bucks an engine! the junkyard said 20!) but one time me and a few buddy's decided to see what we could do with a new 318 and an old daily driver.

we had a 69 4 door valiant. army green with a blue hood and a blue back door from a donor car. we also had a written off 95 half ton ram with a magnum 318 in it. it was only a matter of time before we decided the magnum engine needed a transplant.
we shaved the head's 40 thou, and regasketed the engine with 127000 miles on it. some light port cleanup was done on the stock heads, and the stock camshaft was inspected for anything that could cause a failure. we put the motor in the valiant with a race-ready 904, a 2000 stall converter and a ld340 intake with a thermoquad from a dodge truck, put some 3.91 gears in the back and proceeded to run 13.20s @102-103 mph for the next 3 years. finally retired the motor last year and built a 408 for the valiant this year. times have been between 12.20 and 12.50 depending on track conditions for the new motor. the car was much easier to handle with the 318.

boy were the big block boys pissed off! did i mention that this car was a daily driver while it was a 13 second street machine? a full tank of 87 octane would last about 3-4 days. this is the only 318 i have ever points raced with and i tell ya, you could not find a more consistent engine on the dragstrip than when we were running that little 318.

just a little info i thought all you budget minded racers should know.

by the way those times were at 2800 ft elevation through the exhaust with bald bfg street tires.

I always found the performance of a 318 with minor mods to be pleasantly respectable, at the least.
My own experience with a 318 was on from a 78(?) Ram that was purchased as a temp replacement for one of my Satellites after snapping a crank shaft (previous owners' shitty rebuild option). Slapped on an Edelbrock intake, a PeErformer II if I remember correctly, 650 cfm Holley 4bbl, headers, new cam - an RV grind, couple of other little things, all on a stock, slushbox 904. It was allright. Kept me quite happy for a couple of years as daily driver.
A lot of fun, actually.

An aquaintance had bought a ratbagged '71 Barracuda that the previous owner had been trying to turn into an imitation 'cuda.
It was a 318 car and, somehow, for some bizarre reason the previous owner had aquired a pair of 340 heads and IM, possibly 360 parts - my memory is a bit fuzzy, a moderatly aggressive reground cam, big Carter 4bbl and headers. It ran pretty nicely, very respectably.

Hey
Just wondering how you put a LD340 Intake on a Magnum Engine? Mine would not even come close to bloting up to a older 340 intake!

That's how I read it. The bolt angles are different. It won't work without lots of machining.

our motors are the same as yours in the states!
all the 318 magnums are the same from 93 up.

it just takes a larger drill brit to straighten the holes in the intake.
makes the holes look kinda elongated but with some washers it worked fine.
