Default 727 Race tranney problems

Ok tranney guys....ever see this, or know what causes it....

727 tranney, reverse manual valve body with trans brake...

1st gear no problems
trans brake works no problems
third gear no problems

2nd gear absolutely nothing there, just keep climbing in first, doesnt over rev or slip its just not there. Shift into third and it hits hard...absolutely nothing in second gear, I can put it in second and it feels exactly the same as first.

I will not be tearing the tranney apart, it will be at a shop by an experienced mopar tranney guy, but just looking for some extra info that maybe I could give to him. I am assuming there is some type of pressure loss internally that is not applying the 2nd gear set up....

thanks

You have a 2nd gear band apply problem. Pressure or Mechanical????? In the 727, second gear applies on top of 1st gear, so If second gear never applies, the tranny is still in 1st gear. 3rd gear also applies on top of first gear. If 3rd gear does not apply when second releases, then you are back in 1st gear also.
My 727 had the same symptoms several years ago. I had the lining come off the band.
It could be:
scorched band/drum
broken band, rocker lever, or strut rod
twisted and stuck servo piston

Good luck with it

Billy

thanks Billy...I guess I should have added that this was a new set up. First pass on the tranney after being rebuilt. When it went into the shop for freshening it was working fine. The fella is a respected mopar tranney guy so he will probably know right away.

I have first and third, when I shift to second it stays in first.

It could be a simple oversight. Maybe the band never got adjusted and is simply too loose.
Let us know.

Pulled the pan off and found a little crap in it. Not much but being brand new, I knew right away it was the band. Sure enough was very loose, must have been an oversight. Tightened it up to specs went out and made a few good passes. 9.94 in the qtr. Still slower than it should be but maybe can find a little more outta it.
thanks a bunch....

bummer was throwing away a bunch of synthetic fluid twice with rear problems and tranney problems. I guess I could have tried to filter it but got too much invested in it to do that.
