1971 Duster Super Pro Race Car
The Grape Ape is a page right out of drag racing history. A race car since 1971, The Ape began it's life at the 1971 NHRA Winternationals running in SS/IA. After a short stint(26,000 original miles) as an original 340 4 speed street car it wound up in our family where a career as a successful bracket champion lie ahead. It turns heads everywhere we go and is a crowd favorite.
Currently running a fresh(less than 20 runs) Dennis Maurer prepared 340 engine featuring a stock but fully massaged, polished, balanced crankshaft and Ross custom fitted pistons which generate upwards of 14:1 compression. The output of the 575hp owner-maintained powerplant is controlled by a .700" lift custom roller grind by Comp Cams. A set of X heads prepared and flowed by both Don Studley in Riverside, CA with long valves, polished chambers, milled rocker supports with Harland Sharp 1.7 rockers is responsible for most of the power output. A Carb Shop blueprinted 750 and Offy Port-O-Sonic intake breathe in the 112 octane VP Racing Fuel while a set of original Hooker Adjustables clean the chambers. Protrans in Lancaster, CA prepared the transbrake equipped 727 and A1 4800 stall converter. A Dana 60 featuring 5:12 ProGears with Strange axles and spool brings up the rear. Firestones are featured all around spinning Weld Drag Lites at all four corners. Best ET for the Ape is 10.89 at 124mph at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield. While we spent our last 5 years racing eigth mile tracks in Mississippi and Tennesse although the Ape is more comfortable when allowed to stretch out in the quarter.
