340 Hp
Gentlemen/Ladies, First post for me. I own a 68 barracuda 340 - S
Just want your thoughts on this, What was the actual horse power for the 340. I have read the literature from the factory, 275 so they say but I am also told it was more like 290 or maybe better, maybe somewhere in between? Mark |

From what I've heard those HP numbers just aren't realistic.

Chryslers dynoed the engines when they first made them. This without any accer.'s on the engine. In ex; P/S, A/C etc...Mounted on the engine.
The dynos today are much the same as years ago. The rated power is what they got, and what you should have as a rebuilt to spec engine. The results today would yeild a few HP better. HP underateings happened later on in years when the Insurance companys started to pound on us. They change the ratings to gross instaed of net. Believe it. You have a 275 HP engine. Today, if you rebuilt the engine with todays pistons and rings as the only change, I would not doubt you seeing a 15+ HP gain. Now add a 3 angle valve grind and stainlees valves etc.... |

Form what I have read and gathered the engines that Ma Mopar put out had the hp under rated for insurance concerns. 340's were rated at 275, except six-paks were at 290.
