Running out of Diesel
I met a women today that ran out of fuel in a '01 cummins 2wd. I tried for about 20-30 mins to start it. I bled the system and the fuel filter using the self priming method as well as hitting the needle on the side of the fuel filter and on the side of the injection pump while the system was pressurised. I have a '99 myself and was wondering what the proper bleeding method is for those vehicles. Do I have to open the line on the intake or what. Thanks

I have a 12v so I cannot comment too much about bleeding the air out of a 24v motor, but I would imagine it to be the same as your 1999 seeing how they are both 24v engines.

My experience with a 24 valve that has been emptied is to bump the starter as you described, and bleed it at the injection pump fitting. When you get decent fuel flow I'll crack a couple of accessable injector lines open a bit and crank at 15 sec intervals until I see fuel is at the injectors. Usually shortly after this the engine will try starting. Tighten up the lines and it usually takes off. One thing that can hamper getting the engine started is that if the lift (transfer) pump is weak. Another possibility is that the injection pump itself may have expired.
