Default head identification

This is pretty simple I hope where do you find the casting #'s on a small block head (ie302) when your looking at a greasy engine it would be alot easier if I knew exactly where to look!?

It's under the valve cover. You can't miss it.

I've never looked myself, but I was told by a reliable small block man, that the casting number on the newer heads (ie 302.308) were on the under sider of the head. Intake runner maybe? Thus, they are a pain to find.

I don't know first hand.

The older ones are under the valve covers.

Default Casting Number

Look on top of one of the intake ports. Sometimes you can look between the sparkplug holes on a SB Mopar head and find a letter, like X, J, etc. Still best to pull the valve cover, but the letters help narrow the search.

Default 302s,308s

Casting number is under the intake port - removing the valve cover will tell you nothing about the casting number, unlike the earlier head versions such as 915, 894, 576,etc.

Thaks Dave & Dart. I don't have the greatest knowledge, when it comes to small blocks. I'm glad you guys were actually able to point him in the right direction.

ah I dont no about that. I have a set of 302 318 heads form mid 80;s Ram Charger, there stamped right below the valve cover, Thats how i spotted them, when i picked them up for pennies. Everyone look right over them, i seen them flopped them over sure enough there was the heart shaped chambers. The 302 DOES have the numbers below the valve covers. If anyone doubts it i will take a pic!
