Question Erson cams

What ever happened to Erson cams? They used to be very popular, but have appeared to have fallin' of the face of the earth.
When I bought my car the engine was rebuilt already. It has an Erosn Hi Flow IIH cam (duration @ 50 is 235 IN /235 EX, lift is 472 IN / 472 EX). I will eventually rebuild when the funds are there, probably with a hughes cam. I am just curious about Erson.

Erson cams are alive and well. They are now part of the Mr. Gasket Performance Group, along with Hurst, Mallory, Accel, and Hays, just to name a few. I've never used one in my own vehicle but have sold them to several customers (mostly small block Chevvies and a couple of small Mopars if memory serves me correctly). I never heard any negative from people who bought them, and several have told me they work very well. Hope this helps................djs

Do you know if the grind/cam that I have is still in production. I definitely have complaints about the cam in my 340.

Thaey are well and doing fine. In fact they've develpoed a really awesome offset rocker and shaft kit for W2/W5 heads that comes in under $700 complete, shafts and all. Heres the link to the catalog:

Maybe on the next rebuild I will consider an Erson cam. My experience with this one has been good.

Wow... I've never heard anything good about Erson cams in a MOPAR, until now... lol

Honestly, I would buy a cam designed for a MOPAR (ie. Racer Brown, Hughes). I would throw my money on the ground and let it blow away, before buying an Erson cam.

Default I loved my erson cam

back in the mid 80's I bought an erson cam from the now defunct Supershops
(supersh.ts if you didn't drive chevy) I admit it wasn't very big The TQ 20 .449
lift 292 dur but that cam woke that 318 up it was in a 74 Duster with a 4 speed
and atleast for a couple of miles around the house That car beat all comers I don't honestly know if that was because of the cam or because of the fact that it was a mopar But I loved that cam

First off, the crappy Erson cam weren't taking advantage of the large diameter MOPAR lifter, so they weren't able to develope the power that a Direct Connection cam could.

Most people that I knew that ran them had to replace them Erson cam within 1000 miles, because the lobes would flatten.

They would normally replace them with a DC cam and get much better performance.

Now in the current day, the MOPAR cam isn't that great, as it is old technology/outdated grinds. That's why the Racer Brown and Hughes cams are so much better.

also consider the Ultradyne camshafts.

There are not only TWO 'wonders' in the World.

Ehostler, how much are you getting paid to slam Erson Cams by Mopar Perf. and Racer Brown? Or do they just give you new camshafts every time you need one? The only time I've ever seen cams wipe out in 1,000 miles is if they are put in dirty, without proper break-in lube, or just way too much spring pressure for the application. And usually a cam will be ruined a lot sooner than 1,000 miles if it's going down or it lasts a long time like it should. So what's REALLY up?....djs

Don't forget guys, that the comp cams xtreme energy series is also a design based on "fast rate of lift".
thats the reason i bought one in the first place

Wow, I didn't realize I could offend someone by concidering something that they did not like. I have NO complaints about my current Erson cam. It performs well, I don't see a problem in that. I just said that I would consider using one- not that I was completely sold. I am interested in Hughes cams also. There is no need to get upset.

My next cam will be a Ultradyne or Hughes (Engle). They were giving us .904 Mopar lobes when Comp Cams were still pushing the Chevy lobes at us. Not to say Comp doesn't make a good .904 lobe, I would rather support the companies who were there when we needed them.

I can only wish they would pay me to say bad about other brands...

As far as within 1,000 miles goes, I don't remember exact mileage as I haven't known anyone with an Erson cam for over 15 years. I honestly thought that they dropped off the face of the earth due to poor quality.

The people that I knew that had used them followed proper install and breakin procedures. They followed the exact same install and breakin procedures with their DirectConnection cams.

Erson may be fine for a GM, however, I would never put one in a MOPAR. Heck, when I was still married, I wouldn't put one in my wifes Chevelle. Her Chevelle at least got a Crane Fireball. I felt that it was worth the extra $30 for the superior quality and performance.

Like Slant Cecil said, when it comes to my MOPAR, I will buy a cam from a company that has a history of catering to the MOPAR crowd for sometime. For me, that's Racer Brown. They have been making custom MOPAR cams for over 30 years.
