Rocker arm installation ignorance!
Had a bit of a ticking noise on a 69 340. Pulled the valve covers and one of the rocker shafts was on backwards. Other than identifying which direction the notch on the shaft goes, I don't have any reference to how the rocker arms themselves go on. I have to assume the other bank is incorrect. Since the push rod cups are offset, do they offset to the center on a pair or to the outside? Also, half of them have a raised spot on the valve end with some sort of symbol embossed on it, where do they go in relation to the plain ones. The previous owner did the heads, I probably have'nt put 200 miles on. Does the shaft being backwards only affect the oiling of the rockers? Hate to use up space for dumb-a** questions, but what the heck!

The only dumb question is the one NOT asked. It's been too long since I had to do heads so don't remember the intricasies. When I did the valves in the van last year I just put the rocker and shafts on that side of the rear of the van. Left shaft on the left side of the van. And reinstalled them that way. Originaly did the engine back in '91.

It will affect oiling. The notch goes down. The offset goes to the outside and should be marked lf and rt. That means lf rt lf rt lf rt per bank not lf side head right side head. Have no idea what the raised imbossed mark is. Casting mark I'm sure.

dwc,
They don't have the lf/rt markings, but I'll put em on with the offsets to the outside. The right bank is that way, just wanted to double check that it was correct. Thanks! |

As long as the shaft is installed correctly it's pretty easy to tell if the rocker arms line up with the valve tip, if it's not centered exactly on the valve tip it's not right.

what i remember about rocker arms/shafts is that the arms themselves are "right" and "left". i was never able to determine how the distinction was made, but when assembled correctly, the rockers form some symmetrical pattern. they should also be centered on the valve stem, which wont happen if they are out of order or missing spacers. when i do work on rocker arms/shafts, i always start with a clean work area and start at one end of the shaft, removing the parts one at a time and placing them in order on the bench. that way, assembly is the reverse of disassembly, and the parts go back together correctly. i am pretty picky about this, like valves and lifters, i figure rockers, shafts, pushrods, etc. to be "mated" parts. only do one side at a time, and keep the sides seperated. if you follow this suggestion, you cant get the shafts on backwards, but you do have to make sure the oil holes are oriented correctly, meaning the shaft isnt rotated to the upsiddown position. a decent manual will help you figure this out. good luck
lol... dart got the short version typoed while i was doing my dissertation... lol

Let us know if you figured it out, if not i will look and reply the correct order they go in. A dead give away is to look at the rocker tip and the tip of the valve.

Tom,
I have another version of the valve train photo, but not as much detail. It was just wishful thinking that there was something wrong in the valve train. I believe I've spun my first bearing ( knocking, loss of oil pressure, silver oil, etc) Anyhow, Be the first rebuild I've done in 25 years, I expect I'll be asking mucho questions. |

Ya, that sure sounds like a bearing. I've been out of cars between '81 and '96. So the rebuild thought is no problem. It comes back real good and you'll remember most everything. Just get a book or 2 if you don't have any. I went fom the Plymouth to an AMX so there was new stuff there. But the basics are the same. Now I've got another Plymouth I'm playing with. I rebuilt the engine in the van in '91 and didn't have any problems. So no worries

shafts
The way I remember the shaft location is to remember the word road runner. The notch on the right hand side goes to the rear of the motor always facing down.
