I was thinking the same thing. Was just looking at their site but don't have time to read it today.

I'm also wondering when the 727 first came out and when it was first called the 727 as opposed to being called the torqueflight/torqueflite.

im not sure about this, but i am pretty sure that the original torqueflite was cast iron... had a cast iron housing. i think that it was used as late as 1973 by international harverster in some applications. i think that the aluminum housing torqueflites may be the original 727's. i dont have a clue if any of the parts are interchangeable, but i do know that those cast iron trannys were considered to be indestructable... they just added about 500 lbs to the weight of the vehicle. i have been told that finding one (let alone one that is useable) is next to impossible. if i am wrong about any of this, please feel free to enlighten me, cause i would be interested. btw... the 518 is the overdrive version of the 727.

Got this from John Kunkle from Moparts web chat page in answer to my question there;
[QUOTE]The first year for the Torqueflight was '57, this trans had a cast iron case with a separate aluminum bellhousing, it was dropped in '61.
The 727 with its one-piece case/bellhousing was introduced in '62, most period literature refers to it as the Torqueflight 8 [QUOTE]

Default Tranny Manual

I bought a manual a while back, cant remember the brand, but ATSG sounds right. I was sort of dissapointed in it. I bought the "pamphlet" to help me with my first 727 overhaul and found that it contained nothing more than what a factory service manual and a Motors manual told me. I will check out what brand it was, but I do remeber the cover was blue and only about 90 pages front to back filled alot with diagnosis, again all in the Motors manuals. just my two cents.

When I rebuilt my first 904 I used the Motor's manual and the guy in the speed shop helped me a whole bunch. I was laid off so spent lots of time in his shop helping. No wages. Just learning, so he helped with my learning of auto trannies. But the book was very good to have.

I am interested if the ASTG manual for the A518 is worth getting. I did my first 727 using the factory service manual. That is all that is needed. Maybe I should look for a source for the '94 ish factory service manual.

Default ATSG

I do not have factory service manuals or a MOTOR transmissions book, but I have used the ATSG booklets and I like them. The 727/904 ATSG book has all the pictures and specifications a person needs for a rebuild. I don't know if ATSG is the best, but it works for me.
