Default 413 expectations

ive recently come into the midst of a 72 motorhome 413/727 combo and i was thinking of putting the pair into my 1968 roadrunner.

my goal all along has been for a 400 (crank hp) daily driver with gas milage not being a concern.

ive got a 3.54 geared dana 60 out back to handle the power , so thats not a prob.

what should i look for in this motor and what are some of the obivous concerns.(ive heard about an issue with the pistons) and i really know nothing about these engines.

Thay are the same as the 440 except the bore size. So whatever you can do with a 440 you can do with the 413. The 413 should have the steel crank. Just put in good forged pistons.

If it's a 72 413, then it is a truck motor. The Crank is about an inch longer than a standard car b/rb, the heads and block are different, just about everything is different than a car b/rb. Motorhomes used both truck and car engines so maybe you got lucky and someone took the 440 out and put a car 413 in.

So if there is no adaptor plate between the engine and tranny, then it should be the car engine?

My '71 has a 413. The tranny in it has the numbers for a '68 383 car. So to use this tranny the engine must be a car engine, or motorhome using the car engine? The engine has the number for a standard engine, no year, no special anything. That's my guess anyway.

413's

i know that with dual exhaust in '65 they were rated by the factory at a solid 350hp, as for actual "real-world" numbers, i dunno, i'd guess they should be good for 325hp at least

You need to post some more info on the motor in order to get any help. Maybe the casting number, the info on the ID pad and the casting numbers on the heads. If it is a HD 413 then a bunch of the parts won't really work in a car. If it is a passenger car 413 then it should drop in and work just fine.

The 413 isn't a very popular engine for performance use so parts are harder to come by. You'll need to get custom pistons and the small bore size can cause you some problems. But if you just want a nice big block then it will work. Put Edelbrock heads on it and a Performer RPM manifold and it should run pretty good.
