Default trans gurus

Try this one on for size. I let my friend drive the dart over the weekend. On the third pass the tranny freewheeled on him during a shift I think it was on the first to second gear shift as it happened very early in the pass. I was standing at the starting line watching him. He shut it down and they towed him back to the pits. I figured the second gear band broke. pulled the pan and it was still good pulled the trany out pulled it apart on the car trail (what a mess my trailer is) could not find anything wrong in the transmission. Loaded car took everything back to the shop suspected the converter might have shit its jewels sent converter to shop had it cut apart nothing wrong with the converter. pulled valve body apart while the converter was at shop nothing wrong with it. I am at my wits end with this thing I am putting it back together and will try it again this weekend. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. P.S. watching someone make thier first ten second pass when they get out of the car is priceless

when you say freewheeled do you mean it was stuck in a neutral-like state?

what kind of valve body?

are you using a stock linkage steup? maybe linkage went out of adjustment on the shift and hit neutral? stabbing at the obvious...the fact that everything looked good is why...

was kickdown band within adjustment range? could it have been slipping? (i know they're dumb questions)

when you selected other gears did it have an effect? ie, could you get any forward positions and/or reverse back?

lemme know, I am interested.

Griner trans brake valve body no kick down linkage needed. The more I think about it the more I'm convinced he spun the tires going down the track as this has happend to me before. I should have taken the car for a drive through the pits to see if it was going to shift properly but I did not.

Did you check the sprag clutch in it. The break easy and give no forward gears.

On the 904 I had years ago. The sprag broke and the 1st gear wouldn't work, neither did reverse, but still had 2nd and 3rd. so was able to get it home. Broke twice, B&M trannys, split the case a little also. So I built my own. Don't know about 727's and how the sprag fits into the sceme of things.

No, I'm not. I'm an old stubborn cuss!

I'll need a torque converter and flex plate and tranny come winter and that's the very first place I'm gonna NOT look!!

Careful with the words "no one".
If you have a stiffy for B&M products, fine, but I'd advise against labeling anyone who likes their products as a "chebby guy".
Insults go both ways.

As to the original post, it's a good idea to isolate the problem before removing and disassembling the trans. A few slow laps around the pits would have verified whether or not the trans was shifting to 2nd.

I broke a planetary gear the same way.

It's hard to find, because the crack blends in. You have to tear it right down to find it.

I still had reverse, but no forward, when it broke

I reassembled the tranny last night waiting for the converter should have it back today so I can put the car back together will let you all know how it works. I looked at every part with a fine tooth comb and could not find the culpret I'm even putting in a new flex band just because I had one laying their.

Any chance the front servo sealing rings gave up?
Have you air tested the servos and clutches before you put the valve body back on?

Dave,
Interesting failure of that planetary body.

It was a neat one.

The crack just looked like a casting flaw at first.

When I pulled it out, it became obvious that it had cracked, then spread and sheared the splines off. The pieces fell off then too.

727's are indestructable though right?

Wasn't the tranny that went bad. It was a part or two, or three.
