Unhappy Funny Tranny?

What would cause the car to keep pulling for a few seconds under load when you shift it to neutral from high gear? The tranny shifts and seems fine, no problems barking them in second. Its a factory 727 rebuild with a shift kit. stock valve body and kick down linkage is workin good.

Maybe it's taking a couple seconds for the clutches/band to release. They or a piston may be hanging up. The line pressure might be taking a second or two to reduce enough. HMM, what else can I dream up?

I have seen it many times. Lots of times when your tires are barking in second means there is something wrong in the tranney. It locks them up when it hits second.

I no its not locking up in second gear. It shifts hard. It doesnt do it with wider tires........hmm.......I am not sure of the shift kit manufactor but i know its not B&M. My tranny guy only does Mopar stuff. Thats all he works on and races, besides being a heavy equipment machinest and mechanic. I belive its a Fairbanks, i will find out.

I'm curious to know why one would shift to Neutral from High gear and still have the throttle applied to know it was still pulling.

In High gear the front and rear clutch packs are applied; they are released solely by spring pressure so it takes a while for the clutch discs to separate. Add to that the centrifugal force acting on the trapped fluid behind the clutch pistons resisting the release of the piston and you have the cicumstances for a slow release of the clutches.

Normally the trans is shifted to Neutral at near a stand still where the drums aren't spinning at road speed.

I actually did it on a accident. I new when i shifted that i went to forward with the shifter, but it kept pulling for a second, just freaked me out. Thanks for the reply John. I have a good shifter now, so no more missed shifts.
