how to identify tranny behind /6?
I bought a 76 dart sport last summer. It is a /6 automatic. I assume it is either a 904 or one on its offspring(998,999 ect.)Can someone tell me how to identify what tranny in in this car?
Thanks. |

Look around the bottom of the bellhousing area somewhere it should have cast into it A-904-( ). It is possible but not likley it could be an A-727 A Dart Sport would never have come w/ a 727.Someone would have had to put one in. The 998-999 came behind a V-8 .

You have a 904. The 727's where used in trucks and only in cars used for police/taxi or fleet service. The later varients are the lock up torque converter, used starting in the late '70's.

Just look at the corner of the pan where the dipstick is. If that corner is square it's a 904. If there is a kick-out, it's a 727. I'd bet it's a 904.
