the company that I work for is a major supplier of engine parts and componets for chrysler. We had a meeting yesterday that informed us that almost 20% of our production will be cut because D.C. is dropping the cummins in favor of the mercedes (sp?) engine for the new truck. If anyone would like to know, I will post more info (gossip) as it pops up.

I had heard through my contacts within Chrysler(sales&service training)that they expected the possibilty of both engines being available. Possibly the merc motor being in the new 4500 and 5500 series trucks, which by the way will have an Allison automatic available.
They also own Detroit Diesel too.

Personally I think they would be cutting their own throats if they got rid of Cummins before another engine had a chance to prove itself to the sceptics.

Please tell us all you hear.

Hi Brian:

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant about your company being a parts supplier, but since Cummins builds the engines and your company supplies engine parts to Chrysler, how does a drop in Chrysler's engine parts usage indicate the discontinuation of the Cummins engine?

I would think his company is a tier 2 company..that is they supply parts to someone who supplies parts(ie cummin engines) to an automanufacturer.
they make parts for cummins...
I think they would be stupid to keep cummins due to the fact that they(DC) own every other manufacturer of diesel engines..
its a no brainer

Jack Z,
The company that I work for supplies all of the Alternators and starters for Chrysler, including cummins engine. we build engine controlers, senors, etc. as well. we were suppose to have a big meeting on friday to "discuss" the down turn in production however, it was cancelled. the rumor is that the down turn in production is directly related to the fact that chrysler (who is also our largest customer) is going to be getting a new diesel. I agree that they will be getting the next diesel in house. It only makes sense. Then again, I could be way out to lunch on this one.
Personally, I would hate to see the cummins go.

Question

I thought that GM owned Detriot Diesel?
Years ago when I was a teenager I am pretty sure they had a big GM on the side of the block.
I could be wrong of course.

Years ago, GM did have partial ownership of Detroit Diesel. DC bought the entire company about a month ago.

DC bought it from Penske, who had owned it for a few years.

Okay, it looks like I put my key board in my mouth before I had the whole story. Our down turn in production has nothing to do with the possible loss of the cummins. The main reason is DC sales are off by about 20% from last year, which equates to 20% less we have to supply them. There is still now answer about the cummins.
