Question Engine Balance Question

I have three engines, that I am swapping around with different transmissions. A 318, 340 and a 360. I know the 360 is balanced differently at the torque convertor. I am wondering if the 318 and the 340 are balanced any different at the convertor. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Default balance answer

both the 318 and 340's are internally, or "nuetrally balanced". so no special t conv and or flexplate is needed. on the 360, yes it is externally ballanced and requires its own harm balancer and a wieght on the t conv or a special flexplate. and speaking from experience, 1972 Roadrunner and I know for a fact, that you cannot interchange 340 and 318 cranks and or balancers
Hope this helps ya

The 318 and most 340 engines are internally balanced and use the same neutral balanced converter. There is an era when the 340 was externally balanced. I think all "cast crank" 340 engines are externally balanced and use an externally balanced converter.

More input from others please.

Yep, you better find out what year 340's there are. The 318 is nuetral balanced. The 360 requires a weight added to the flywheel or converter. B&M makes the flexplates for the 340 engines and 360's. There about $75. Usually the later 72-73 340's are the ones which require diff balancing. The flex plate allows the swapping of converters without messing with the weights.

Depending how often you're doing the swap, a rebalance of the converter is much cheaper.

A transmission supply store/converter rebuilder should be able to weld on the right weight for a 340(72-73 cast), or for a 360 for about $20 or less. Charged me $20 canadian to do it, they did it while I waited. You can always knock(cut) the weight off, if you want to go back.

The cast 340 is easily visable, as it has in plain print"For cast 340 engine only" on the balancer. Or something similar anyway.
