Rice 360 Combo (please review Don)

Just spoke with Jim at Racer Brown (nice guy by the way) and he helped me pick out a cam for my engine that I am going to have built in the next few months.

Combo is to be as follows:

'69 Dart GTS
360
750 Mighty Demon (mecanical sec.)
1/2" 4 hole phenolic spacer
M-1 dual plane intake
587 swirl port heads flowing 220 cfm @ .500" lift
Factory adjustable ductile rocker arms
9.5:1 compression
Headers
2" exhaust
4 speed

Question I have is Jim suggested 2 cam profiles for me. First being their 236@50 .486 lift solid cam and the other being the ss-h-25 238@50 .485 hydralic cam. Jim suggested going with the hydralic cam over the solid. I know I can change to 1.6:1 rockers.. should I?

It sounds to me that both of these cams are low in lift for their listed duration. I'm wanting a cam that will get me into the 12's. Has anyone tried either of these cams and what are your results with it? Or what are your thoughs on this combo?

I'm planning on making my car a car that I can drive 100 miles to a track, race it, and then drive home. any help would be greatly apprecisted. Thankx!

Thumbs up Combo

It sounds like you've got a nice combo. You are gona need bigger than 2" exhaust though. I would suggest at least 2 1/2". I would go with a hydraulic cam, especially if it is going to be driven on the street. I ran a Hughes 3844 hydraulic in my 340 Dart last year, it had 237/244 duration @ .050 but with .535/.540 with 1.5 rockers. The cam had a rough idle, probably more than you would want with a driver, but it made excelent power(12.06@110 in the quarter) I built a 360 for my bro-in-law's 73 Duster with 9.5:1 comp, Aerohead smog heads w/2.02/1.60 valves, MP 280/474 purple shaft, Performer RPM intake, 650 Holley DP, cheapo headers, 727 auto with cheapo GER converter, and that ran 12.80's. So you should have no trouble getting into the 12's with your combo. Good luck.

Go with a 2.5" dual exhaust with crossover.
The Edelbrock Performer RPM air-gap is a better matched intake for your combination.
I have never used (or profiled) a racer brown cam. I do like the profiles of the Hughes cams, but their sales people need an attitude adjustment.
It is really hard to compare cams on just their duration at one point and valve lift because it dosen't show the true profile of the cams lobes. You also did not mention the cams lobe seperation angle or if they are single pattern or dual pattern cams.

For a street car with full exhaust your usually better off with a cam like the Hughes HE3038AL. The wider LSA makes a smoother idle and wider power band, but gives up a bit in "peak" power. The split duration (larger exhaust duration) helps when you have a full exhaust or reduced exhaust port flow, and most small block heads have poor exhaust port flow.

The 1.6:1 rockers may not make much difference in power because the stock cylinder head port flow usually flattens out at lifts around 0.500". If your going to replace the rockers anyhow to have an adjustable valve train, then the 1.6:1 rockers cost the same so I would probbably get them. Just make sure the additional lift dosen't cause problems like valve spring coil bind, retainer to valve stem clearance, or valve to piston clearance problems. You will also want to check the pushrod clearance where the pushrod goes through the cylinder head.

Both cams have approx 22 degrees of overlap and are single pattern cams.

I've run both of these profiles on Dyno2000 and Drag 2000 and they tell me I'd have about 340 @ 5500 rpm horse and about 420 Ft./lbs of torque @ 3500 rpm. That'd give me about a 13.068 1/4 mile pass in a perfect world with street tires. Sound right to you guys?

Sounds like you have been playing around with the computer programs to much. Then again, you also witheld info that would be needed for a decent guess.

1. Tires diameter.
2. Rear end ratio.
3. How well is your suspension set up.

With the suspension, how stock is it and is it from a 6cyl?

Default 12's should not be a problem

either of those cams will get you into the 12's if you have proper gears (3.91...possible 4.10) and the chassis is the least bit setup. that combination is many times racier than a combo i ran 12's in, at 2800 ft elevation! although my car had to have a small cam in it because it was my daily driver =)

with the right tune, probably mid 12's.

good luck

I guess I forgot the basics. Sorry

Rear gears are 3.91 and tires are 14 x 24.5". I would like to goto around a 26" tire does anyone know a tire that is about that size that'll fit in the wheelwells and on a stock rim? Tires are currently 8" wide.

I'll be connecting the front and rear uni-body with 2" x 1/8" thick square steel by welding them in place. Other than that I've got a pinoin snubber and everything else is stock GTS. Thankx again guys!

i fit 28x9 inch slicks in my wheelwells, little bit of 'work' needed to be done to the wheel opening but very unnoticable.

i run 245 65 15's on the street, a little over 26 inches tall. very quick revving with short tires!

What tires have you guys put on stock Ralley's (4" bolt pattern) and fit under a '69 dart? I have 225 60r14's. Good fit but would like to get more tread width. If I get off set rims what kinda offset should I get and what wheels would fit that? Any suggestions would be appreciated. THANKX!

Had 235/60/14 on mine. You should go up to 15"
