vertigate moves straight back and forth. supershifters use traditional h pattern. vertigate you have to hold up on a lever for 1st and 2nd gear, release for 3rd and 4th. I have an old vertigate at home.

I loved my old Hurst Vertigate... You only needed to pull the lever up to get into first. The lever is supposed to stay up, on its own, you you pull straight back into 2nd. It drops, when you push forward, to engage 3rd. Then it's a straigth pull back for 4th. It was very slick. If you miss a gear with that shifter, there is something wrong with you...

Hey E. & drag-n-cuda.

I'm looking to step up off the OE hurst in my ride.
Does the Vertigate use stock rods? Anything I should be aware off before jumping to this shifter?

far from stock rods... The shift rods on the Vertigate are very large in diameter. They have very little flex and will take tons of abuse.

I was wondering the same thing. What one is better? Is it harder to adjust the v- gate?

Do they still make the vertigate shifters or do I need to start looking at swap meets for these things? Guess I'll try to find the Hurst web site too.

There still made I think there called V-gate shifters now. Give Summit or Jegs a call. Mine was around $325 I think with the install kit.

Setup and adjustment of the Vertigate is no harder than any other Hurst shifter.

When I bought mine back in the late '80s, I got the last Hurst Vertigate that my speedshop was able to get. At that time, Mr Gasket had just bought Hurst and Mr.G was selling the Hurst Vertigate as the Mr. Gasket V-Gate.

That sounds like a cool shifter for sure! But one quick?? What the downshift like? Say from 4 to 2nd? Does it take 2 hands and a extra brain? Just askin if it becomes second nature? I may try to locate one my self!

The shifter handle is a T. Within easy reach of the middle two fingers is the smaller gate T. I can't say about the 4 to 2 down shift, as I always downshift one gear at a time. As you are coming out of 4th, you just squeeze the gate T. Once you hit neutral, the gate T will pull up, then just pull back and you are in 2nd.

I just looked it up on the Hurst website. It is now the V-gate 2. They have made a few changes to it, since I bought the original. It looks a little different, but, it is stronger than the original.

Here is a copy of the page out of the Hurst On-line catalog.

Do you think it is a good choice for the street or is there other shifters that is better?

As that car was my daily driver (at the time), I did a lot of street driving with that shifter. It's not for everyone, but, it sure was a fun shifter.

Only you can decide if it's for you. A lot of people probably wouldn't like having to raise the gate, during downshifting.
