Default Pinion angle?

Gents,

I measured my pinion angle as follows:

1) Rig protractor with a bolt hanging from a piece of thread to identify angles. Make sure all 4 tires are flat on ground.

2) Set driveshaft u-joint up/down in relation to car. Place protractor flat on u-joint cap and measure angle.

3) Rotate driveshaft 90 deg and measure pinion angle by placing protractor flat on yoke.

4) Take the difference of the angles and that is your pinion angle (Mine happened to be 1 degree nose down for the pinion and the front angle was 1 degree also)

Is this correct? Should I be running 4-5 degrees nose down for hard launches?

I do not have any vibration but I did notice after one summer of hard driving on new u-joints there were dinky metal shavings in the bearing cup.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

What condition are the springs in? A good set of SS springs will require LESS angle than a set of worn out ones.

Don't run any more angles than you have to. More angle either way can stress and wear-out those U-joints.

thanks for the reply,

the springs are 3000-3200lb SS springs in an A-body, 3 yrs old and with minimal real "hard" launches on them.

When i said hard driving I mean downshifting from a roll, engine at the time was around 425hp on the bottle.

Actually, how the car sits in relation to the ground is not revelant, this is a measurement of the difference between the centerline of the pinion and the centerline of the driveshaft. Nothing else counts. I would stay with the specs for your car, the nose will come up a great deal even with the SS springs. The spec for my circle burner is 4 to 5 deg nose down and we don't do standing starts.
