Question advance spring question ?

Hey Guy's, question ?
Engine: '68 318 many, many miles, but run's well. 4bbl, stock 340 cam. I converted to elect. ign. engine times best at 7 deg. btdc. BUT hit's 35 deg. at 1525 rpm's. i pulled dist. back out to check spring situation and compared to original spring in points dist. i had replaced and they were the same. wouldn't it stand to reason i need a stiffer spring to slow up advance ?and what degree total advance and when do i want it to come in for this mild combination? dist. is stock out of who knows what that i had removed years ago. orange ecu. one more question: previos owner installed cam and intake, a stock cast iron 340 intake on the original '68 318 heads. if memory serves me, arent the 340 intake ports quite a bit larger than 318 heads? a bad match? what should i exspect, just a temparary engine while i perform body work/other modifications. thank for help. BRIAN

Seems it does have a fast rate of advance there. That dis will make a good high po engine run well. Ditch the vacum advance and run about 14 deg intial and still have the same total. Your correct a heavy spring will slow the curve down. The heads and intake dont match well, your correct there, but as you said, if going to another engine later on, i would spend a dime on it. As long as it gets ya from point a to point b.

Titan: Most people say that all the mechanical advance should be in at 2500 or so for a stock or mild engine and 2000 for a race only engine. If you want more initial timing you will have to weld up you advance slots a bit to take out some of the mechanical advance. Does the car ping right now when you floor it with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged?

have only taken car on maiden voyage and did not push it yet. although it is a mopar and i have NO doubts of its strength! im going to go out today and give it a real test. as far as vacuum advance goes i left it unhooked this last time to get 35 deg. at 1525 rpm as opposed to about 1300 rpms with it attached to ported vacuum.
