Problem UPDATE. One thing at a time...kinda
1st, I set Timing at 35* total. I thought my rings may not be seating because I probably blew the hell out of the power valve, and it could be dumping too much gas which could cause the rings not to seat. (so i'm told)
I still am unable to restart once it's warmed up which again thought may be the carb. I'm getting spark too. So I just changed the Holley 800 back to the Edelbrock 750 let it warm up a few minutes, double checked the timing killed it and tryed to restart. nothing I do have a Optima battery, I thought it would crank it longer than a normal battery, the starter could very well be dragging enough to be a little tuff on the battery by now. I wanted to let it run a while with the Edelbrock carb on to see if the rings will seat. My last resort is to tear it back down to put new rings in it. When the motor is cold it runs fine but still too much smoke from the breather. Now, I must get it started again to see if the smoke goes away. I really wanna blow it up. |

I need vacuum gauge lessons! I stuck the gauge on a 454 suburban with a stock cam and the same edelbrock 750 and it went to normal (like 20) on the vac advance port. stuck the vac gauge on mine and it said 12-13
What the ^$#@ ?????? Does anything on this motor make sense? What kinda vacuum am I suppose to be getting? Also I pulled the dipstick out and oil was spurting out the tube! I'm about out of options, I going to have pull this thing and start over. Could all these problems be related??? Any Last Thoughts? Christine is Reborn!!!! |

The vacumm would depend on the cam and such.
The oil out the dip stick tube would mean a bad blowby, maybe rings, maybe a hole in the top of the piston. Take a cylinder pressure test. and may have to tear it apart. Do the pressure test and tell us what each cylinder reads. |

OK Latest update,
so far the steel head gaskets were on upside down, Not sure if that would do anything but I'm sure it didn't help matters, (note) no I did not do this, a friend who was "suppose" to know what he was doing did). taking the pistons out now. No holes in pistons Further update later... Thanks to everyone for helping thus far. -Scott- |

Yes it appears I was sold the wrong piston rings! The gaps must have been a 1/4 inch!!! Well I didn't know any better!
