ive heard two stories of how the slant 6 got slanted.first, the long stroke made the engine too tall to fit under an Abody hood straight up.second,it was designed as a V-12 but was too big and expensive to prouduce,so it was basicly cut in half.both of these stories sound good to me.anybody really know?

I'd go with the first thing about it not fitting the A-bodies. Who really knows? It could be something totally different. Good question.

The way I remember reading on http://www.valiant.org is that that chrysler was building an inline 4. They tested the 1st inline 4 and it didn't make much power. they knew they needed an inline 6, however it wouldn't fit under the '60 Valiant prototype's low hood. they slanted it so that it would fit.

Yes, it was for hood clearance. Also, the water pump was moved back onto the slant side, making the engine shorter, too. Dennis

Straight Sixes (including slant sixes) were great motors. They're inherently balanced, like a V8. Damn shame Mopar stopped making them.

Just look what GM is getting out of their new straight-six in their trucks: 270 HP.

About the only thing I didn't like about the /6 I had in my 81 ram was the sound. I like the sound of the V-6 I have in my 88 ram better.

Cool

I know a number of other brand fans that tout the durability of the slant six. Just one of many Mopar engines that are legends.

No doubt about it, the slant is infamous and will probably remain that way. Good motor.

You guys miss out on another good feature of the /6. The long stroke that gives this engine massive torque output especially for a one barrel like mine. I know the engine sound is whimpy but changes to the exhuast can easily make up for it. I do regret that mopar never made a street legal mpfi system for it I think it would have been great to have one. Clifford Performance claims that with the right parts from them (I think) the slant would be capable of putting out one horse per cub. in..

I have vowed to myself not to replace it with a v-8, but to instead rebuild it to make it even better.

On the way new set of Bridgestone Desert Duelers A/T's

rather,

Funny you bring that up. Tonight in live chat we were talking about that and how they should have fuel injected that motor. I would have liked to see what it could do before they replaced it with the 3.9

To bad we don't live closer to each other. I would love to do some before and after test runs of modifications against your 3.9l.

Clifford Performance use to sell a mpfi conversion kit but I don't think it is around any more but I think turbo city makes a universal tbi for the /6. Both were made with gm parts mostly. I wouldn't have been satisfied with just a tbi unit.

I think the 3.9 had more HP, but they can't be compared as far as I'm concerned because one was a carb and the other is fuel injected. I have 125HP/195footpounds as numbers for my motor. I would love to have MPI. That would be great. I wonder if anyone has ever compared the performance of these motors? They would have to have the same mods but that would be interesting. That was funny I didn't catch it before. I wanted to replace my V-6 with a V-8 but the more I drove it the more I wanted to rebuild it and keep the truck the way it is!!

one of the main reasons that I believe they got rid of it was weight and or size of the motor..I was alos under the impression that the /6 was half of a German Panzer(the Tank) v12..Chrysler Engineers during the war built and designed primarily Tanks in WWII. ALthought the Kokomo Tranny Plant#1 built Planes during the war.

SAE net horse is 140@3900rpm and torque is 215@1600 for an '87 one barrel /6. two barrels added ten more on each measurement.

Compress ratio is 8.4 to 1. Yours I thinkis 9.0 to 1.

BTW I'm am now able to pull 38 mph out of my first gear before running to fast. When I change the rear ratio to 3.9 or 4.1 that will drop of course but takeoff will be even better.

I am seeing conflicting numbers. 3 books I have tell me the stock HP of the 225 in a ram was 100-110 HP and an extra 10 with that bolt on mentioned. I can't see dodge putting a less powerful motor (3.9) in the ram for the 88 model year. Does anyone else have numbers for that motor? On chat last night I also got the same numbers in my books from other 225 owners. 100-110HP.
