Default Shifter cables, not 1 but 2?

Ok, I've got a 65 barracuda that originally came with a 904 in it. The shifter, when I inspected it today had 2 shifter cables.

One of the cables obviously goes to the tranny to organize shifting.

The other cable only engages when the car is in park. I've got another car with a 727 i'd like to put this shifter into, but it currently has only one shifter cable in it.

This may be the reason the car won't start in park.

can anyone give me the lowdown on how these cables work in unison and where this second park-only cable comes in and connects to the tranny?
Thanks,

Morgan

The '65 transmission has a separate park mechanism in a housing located on the bottom of the tailhousing, one cable engages this mechanism while the other cable plugs into the trans and operates the valve body. After '65, the shift lever was external and operated all of the gears and Park.
If the 727 you want to use only has one cable, either it is a '66 and later with an external shift lever and an aftermarket cable shifter or it is a '62-'65 with one cable missing.
Internal valve body differences will allow only '65 or console shifted '64 transmissions to be operated by your shifter. Do you know what year the 727 is?
The no start in Park is associated with the neutral safety switch that is threaded into the drivers side of the trans. If it will start in Neutral but not Park, the problem is cable adjustment. If it won't start in either Neutral or Park, the switch or wiring is the fault.

Starts in neutral just fine.

Any way to tell what year the 727 is? Should there be a second lever hookup?

I have an aftermarket cable in the car currently, assuming that it's not correctly adjusted, any articles/recommendations on shifting?

Thanks

The trans part number is stamped in the case above the pan gasket on the drivers side, this will identify the year and application. If the trans has two levers stacked on the drivers side, it's a '66 or later.
