Unhappy Leaking header Woes!

After taking it out last night i noticed the tell tale wisping sound coming from the same header I put a new gasket on two weeks ago. The gasket seems connected with another problem that occurred around the same time. The car seems to have an erratic idle when parked or in gear at a stop. I swear that it did not do this before the gasket let loose. It seems like the engine has a miss. I tuned the idle circuit on the carb and ended up leaning it out quite a bit due to installing a new recurved distributor from cuda which really helped the part throttle response and seriously diminished the slight hesitation I used to get from a stop, but when it is idling at a light it almost seems like it wants to die. Can a leaky header gasket cause the engine to miss?

A leaking header can cuase a lose of power and if it could cuase it to lean out enought that would cauce a mss also. Take to store bought gasket sets. The paper on one side and meat al on the other side type. Glue the two paper sides together with red high temp rtv. That's how we do them on our race cars and they will last a season without a prob. But we do recheck the torque on them ever night and they are always tight. Try that and see how it works for you.

I suppose it's possible, but I have just given up on trying to fix header leaks unless they are big. Life is short and that just takes up too much of my time. I've got other things I want to do.

Boy dwc i hope you are right about the miss. I suppose it is technically not a miss, but it sure feels like the motor is sort of hicuping when it is idling. It doesn't die, but it seems like if the idle was 25 RPM lower it sure would. i was running it too rich on the idle circuits before too so i am also thinking that i better do a plug check too. The two issues are probably compounding each other. Thanks for the replies. I guess I am back to the garage to change out the damn header gasket....AGAIN! MP headers!!!!

I should have saved up and bought tti's!

I' put some of the mister gasket ones on my bb and they lasted a week of driving.

I ordered up cometic ones from fbo, and I've got regular driving, and three trips to the track so far.

see don's site

hmm, only reason his went out in the first place was cause the a bolt wasn't completely sealing the water jacket, and it pretty much rotted the gasket (or so it looked! ). if these mr. gaskets don't hold up (one on passenger side is fine), then i'll talk to my bro about the cometics...

whack the flanges!

I cut the flanges apart on a brand new set of headers. this isolates each pipe tp its own set of bolts, which allows for better sealing. Now the two centers will have to be held with only two bolts. I used the reg gaskets that came with the headres and I have absolutly no sign of even a wisper coming from the headers.

Last year...3 sets of header gaskets

This year with Cometic gaskets...no leaks, no drips, no ticks....

For under $20 BB or SB you just can't find a better header gasket.
