One thing I've noticed is lately, is several different Neons, some coupes , some sedans, that have a bulged or domed hood on them. Does this always denote a DOHC 2.0? Or was the domed hood an option you could get on any Neon? The 2 Neons I've managed to look under the lid on a domed hood, did have the DOHC, but 2 is hardly a good indication if this is true or not. Does anyone know for sure? and if I see a domed hood Neon lounging around on the back of a car lot, should I investigate further, any replies are appreciated!

Usually, Yes. If the car is a DOHC, then it has a domed hood - due to the stock intake tubing. I think I had heard of some early '95 models shipping with the regular hood on a DOHC car. You might also see a 'few' SOHC's with the hood. But overall, the DOHCs are the powerbuldge. Another way to tell the pre2000's apart is the muffler. All SOHC's have a single outlet on the muffler while DOHC's have dual outlets.

The "power bulge" hood was used on "some" SOHC cars.
The best way to check for a DOHC Neon is check the 8th digit of the VIN. If it has a C, it is a SOHC. If it has a Y, it is a DOHC. This of course assumes that it's parked. If you need/want one with an automatic transmission, go for the SOHC engine. The DOHC starts making it's power just as the tranny shifts to the next gear. Read---slower than a SOHC automatic. Keith,
You are correct...assuming that it's still factory original. I know a LOT of SOHC owners that have installed used DOHC mufflers...adds about 4-5 HP. Thanks guys! That's what I wanted to know, and thanks especially to Mopar_Maniac, the serial number check will come in handy as well! I got some Neons to look at now, there is a cute little purple coupe in town...
