Aluminum flywheel?( two questions)
I've picked up a very nice Scheifer 6 bolt, big block aluminum flywheel, witha bronze face. It's about half the weight as a standard steel one. It has 172 teeth. I have two(2) questions:
1. Will this work with a mini starter?(or will it turn too slow) 2. Will this work in a 3500lb car(is there enough centrifigal mass) Engine is 440+ .030, 10.3 CR 4 speed trans 3.91 8 3/4 Thanks in advance! ~Jim. |

If you are using street tires, an aluminum flywheel works great. Helps to not bust the tires loose so easy.
I think the 172 tooth flywheel needs to be used with the 66 - 69 hemi bellhousing and starter. I don't think it will fit into the same bell as the usual 130 and 142 tooth flywheels use. |

67 Belv-
I'm using a Lakewood scattershield, so no problem on fit. What do you think of the mini starter with this? Will it turn fast enough? Thanks, Jim. |

Mini starter wont work. The teeth numbers are off. Dont try using that on a street car either. That flywheel wont last one night on the street.

Just wondering why this will not work on the street ?

Cant take the heat generated by street driving, slipping the clutch on take off or hills, etc etc. It's strictly a race piece.

anyone have a lite 130 or 142 tooth FW....and it does NOT have to have a nice face on it - AT ALL.
I have a boat application that does NOT have to have a good facing on it. I will just have to make sure that the teeth spacing will work on this V drive set-up. |

???????.....
.....I need a F W to use in that boat v drive. ALL it does in this application is start the motor. And as said before - it does not have to have a good clutch face on it. |

OK......
But the talk was about a 172, 142 and 130 tooth 6 bolt FW so I assumed that all were on the same "page" ... This is a RB wedge engine....in a 19 foot hydro-plane. |

I agree, the lakewood housing needs to be used with a 143 or 130 tooth wheel, not the 172.
I have had sucess with an aluminum flywheel on the street using a non-marcel sintered iron disc and aluminum pressure plate. Chatters a bit when trying to engage it slowly, but i run street tires and it hooks alot better with the light weight fw & pp. |

d - this is a V drive boat. JETS are for hot-tubs !!
..................and I think that this combo would do better with the lightest wheel possible. This is my first experience with this combo. |

Sorry, my bad. I do like hot tubs though.
Well the hughes flex plate should be much lighter than an aluminum flywheel. Not as thick and only serves to mount a converter and starter ring. Still pricey though. |

Hot Tubs are GOOD but not on boats......(the Jet drive Boyz HATE that phrase!!)
That Hughes plate?........how much does it weigh and what is the cost? What is the size/number of teeth? |
