Default Parts for a high-torque 220hp 318. Suggestions?

Ok guys, I finally am having the cop tranny/suspension/steering etc. swapped into my '83 5th Ave. When it returns to my loving care next week, it will have an A999 with a 2.74 1st gear, a 2.76 open 8 1/4, 2.5" single catless exhaust, and a bone stock 2bbl 318. What I would like to end up with is about 200-220 hp and about 300 ft-lbs of torque. This is my daily driver, so I'd like to keep mileage to at least 15 mi/gal in-town and 20 highway. The car weighs 3800 with me in it. The A999 has a stock (1500rpm) lock-up converter which I would like to keep. I'm looking for some balls from the stoplights, and some nice passing power. That's it. No balls-to-the-walls racing. Obviously the power and torque should peak lower than a strip engine. Will I be able to accomplish this with polished 302 heads, my cast-iron cop intake (I wanna keep my AC) and a small 4bbl? It will be getting a MP Elec. Ignition upgrade soon (already have it from a previous project) and I have a Blaster 2 Coil for it as well. What kind of rpms will the torque and power peak at with an RV cam? Can I use the 974 1.60/1.88 heads I have around instead of the 302s and keep port velocity up?
Thanks for any and all opinions.

IMHO keep the 302s since you are NOT looking for all out horsepower or high rpms.

a cam with 204-214* duration should do the trick.

just curious, what gear ratio in in your 8.25?

The 302 is a 318 head. Port velocity will not change like the swap to a 360 head would.
A simple cam change will help alot.
In example, MoPars 260/268 duration cam would be fine. Small split pattern. Many people have for years used the 340 cam to boost power. Many still do and love it.
Headers are a big plus in this. Open air cleaner. Dual exhaust. Viscous fan or an electric fan.
Just pocket port the heads. It'll be fine and enuff.
Your 2.76 gears should be swaped out. A good set for mileage and hwy. passing power would be 3.23's.
Sorry, can't say exactly where peak torque would be.

I just built a 'mild' 74' 318 for my Demon Sizzler:

stock short block-double roller t/c set, hv oil pump, moly rings;
#302 heads, 273 adj rockers, Edelbrock Performer, stock exh manifolds, 2" duals, 850 cfm IH ThermoQuad, MP ignition,
Crower hyd cam: .423"-.441"/250-254 duration(204-208 @.050")
and this is without a doubt, the best rv cam I have ever used in a
318. I like it more that the Edelbrock Performer or the MP .430"-260 duration cam. I have a 7-1/4 rear with a 2.71 gear and a 904
and my mileage @ 65 mph is a consistent 18+ and the engine will rpm to 5,000. It is a strong runner for such a 'mild engine, DAVID.

I think that cop intake has 360 size ports, and if it does I would go with a Performer on the 302 heads, as mentioned earlier.

Hey Rumblefish et al thanks for the replies. I have to be able to cheat through an emissions test, so headers are a no-go, and I just had the exhaust done so I'm gonna have to go with that too. I forgot to add that I will be running an aftermarket hi-flow Air Cleaner too. Already has a viscous fan . Also, I'll see how it does with the 2.76 rear for now. I live about a mile from the cross-town freeway, so the car sees a LOT of highway use, and my tires won't be that tall. Either 215/70-15s or 235/60-15s. Haven't decided yet.
As far as the cam goes, I'll try some in my ingame Dyno2000 in MotorCityOnline, before it dies out.
Thanks guys,

NIce choice!

Glad to hear the 5th Avenues are getting a second life up there too!
Sounds like your on the right track with the engine. with the A999 lockup, you can get away with a little taller gear in the rear for that "get up N go" at the stoplights. 2.73 is a bit lame for that, IMO. I run a 3.55 in my 5th and it spools up pretty good @ 60mph. But dont ask me about gas milage. cuz Im runnin a 360 with a tunnel ram and two holley 600's I get somwhere around 5-8 mpg
I cannot remember all of Mopars gear ratio's, but isnt there one in the low 3's like 3.21 or around there? If there is I think that would be an excellent choice. Help me out here everyone.
Good luck and keep us posted on the progress!
