Default Are 318 and 360 front covers the same?

Starte the assembly of the engine today, gapping rings and such, and thought before I left I would put the crank seal in the front cover. I was going to use the 318 cover on my 360, cause it was all beadblasted and clean, and started hammering the seal into place which looked like to big of a seal anyways. Well, one broken seal and timing cover later, I thought maybe the covers are not interchangable. Was I just an idiot, or are there two different seals for the 318 and 360?

Thanks

I thought they were supposed to be as long as they're the same year range of engine.

I think the front crank seal is the same? The covers are different. I believe the 360 is larger where the oil pan fits to the cover.

The small block covers changed I believe in 1970 (or 69) when the water outlet switched sides and the water pump went from a cast iron to an aluminum. The timing marks also swiched side so that they would be visible (otherwise the marks would be covered by the water outlet). So if the timing marks are on the same side (and opposite to your lower water outlet) you are in business.

The 360 and the 318 have the same timing cover. The difference in the oil pan sealing is on the rear main bearing.

Sometime in the late 70's or early 80's they also changed the front seal arrangemnet. The 80's one is more desirable because it allows you to change front seal without removing the timing cover. With the 70's type the seal presses in the backside, so the cover must be removed to change seals.
