the 383 is a great engine for build ups....has a very desirable bore to stroke ratio. also, mother mopar made about a gajillion of them, so parts are available from all over including ALL the aftermarket folks.

build it with a little compression, give it a chance to breathe w/ a good cam and some porting work, then hold on.

have fun.

The 383 thinks it's a small blockand runs best when treated as such.

9.02 @149, .030" over 383, .600" lift solid lifter cam, TRW boat anchor pop-ups, stock rods, stock crank, 213 heads with 2.14" and 1.81" valves, injected on alcohol, 727 Torqueflye with Coan converter and Griner brake, 3.91 gears and 13" X 33" slicks, launched a 4600 and shifted at 7000 rpm.

The 65 383 might have obsolete heads from the factory. You can tell buy the number of hold down bolts to the valve covers, the later ones have 6. They have weird pedestals for the rocker shafts. The 383 is a real engine for sure. 99% sure it will have a steel forged crank. A swap to a later 452 unleaded head will be reccomended, but will drop compression drasticlly if using stock pistons, most pre 68 Big mill engines used a closed chamber head design. If your swaping pistons, go for the 452's they flow better than your stockers do

Hey Hill, right down the road from you on Hwy 155 south of Tyler is a Mopar mechanic shop who can help you and if you call the Napa in Palestine,Greg can help with parts. I use to race at the Whitehouse Drag Strip in the 1970's. Good luck on your project.

The 340 and 383 are the true street performance engines from Mopar. The engine can be tuned, stroked or built for max output at high RPMs, what car will the engine go in?

LOL! Ya damn right. It just dosn't realize it yet, so don't tell it anything different. They love to rev, come with fordged parts and run like a Devil.

hello, hill. the 65 383 has 2.08 int and 1.60 exh valves. the best
head to use is the 906 head with an F or M letter behind it. these
heads out flow all the other BB heads at low and mid lift. at .500
all are about equal. good luck

If you choose to run 906 heads be sure to have hard seats in stalled in the exhaust if it's going to be a daily driver
