new tranny gears
Ok so I put in my gears. Acceleration great top speed sucks . Don't get me wrong I knew that would be the end result when I went 3:55s. But here's the question. As much as I would love over drive for my 383/727 combo I don't have that much spare cash. Can I change my 3rd gear ratio from 1:1 to something like 0.8:1? when I shift from 2nd to 3rd I'm revving @3000 rpm in 3rd, 3500 if I'm pushing hard. I figure since my powerband seems to start at @2300 I wont really suffer from having the longer last gear. If that can't be done can I make My 1st and 2nd gears shorter and leave my third 1:1? Then I could go back to 2.89:1 and get the best of both worlds (If this is what I have to do I wish I'd thought of it sooner) . Any suggestions?

It would be easier and cheaper I think to ethier;
Do a gear Vendors Overdrive unit behind the tranny or swap in a GM 4spd auto tranny. Custom gear work can be done by Liberty or Richmond. These guys do manual trannys, auto's may be possible. |

There are no gears involved in 3rd speed in a Torqueflight, the input shaft and the output shaft are locked together for the 1:1 ratio.
Replacing the factory 2.45 1st gear with an aftermarket 2.77 1st gear set ($500) would help, but not that much. |
