BB question
Are there any bolts on a BB that go into the water passages? I want to make sure everything is good to go before I paint the engine.

Most of your exhaust bolts hit water. also some in front of the engine where the water pup attaches.

I've also found that intake bolts will leak oil sometimes(they open into the push rod area)
I think I'll put a bit of sealant on those, the next time I do an intake. Assuming I remember |

I guess I have never torqued the intake manifold bolts........ever! I always started in the middle and worked my way criss srossing out to the ends. Never broke, cracked, a intake yet. Maybe i should start. This would be a good poll, See How many people torque them.

My dad used to say, tighten a 3/8" bolt to about a grunt, head bolts, two grunts and a fart. I do torque most bolts, but intakes are such a paint to do with anything other than a wrench I rely on my dad's system.

Most of the middle intake bolts you can't get a torque wrench on anyway. Get them tight and torque the others. Then tighten one of the others with a wrench to feel how tight and tighten the middle ones about the same by feel. Works for me.

No question it may give a false reading.
Equally, I don't think it's too crucial(as the others have indicated) A head bolt would be a different story, but with the realatively low torque values on an intake, I think the sealant would produce a toque reading, within manufacturers tolerences. Definately, a valid point to bring up. |

Well, I already spotted the intake bolts going through the heads and used Permatex thread sealer on them. Torqued to 40lbs just FYI. The two I wasn't sure about are the water pump housing to block and the exhaust manifold bolts. Should I use a high temp sealer on the exhaust bolts?

Never used sealer on the intake bolts, figured nothing but crankcase pressure on em. The torque specs, however, always spooked me. 45 is OK on a gr 8 SAE rod bolt but 40 on a USS in a thin section of cast iron makes me nervous. I've heli-coiled several so I use an end wrench, and a short one at that. Don't think the w/p hsg bolts go to water, but the ex man studs definitely do.
