Anybody out there have the Car Craft article on Thermoquads? Does anyone remember the year and month of the article? Any info would be much appreciated.

Default thermoquad

What I am looking for is reference numbers for many of the metering rods that came stock, such as # 1966 and so forth. Also would like stock jetting and rods specs for 340-360 and 400-440's. Also would like the baseline adjustment on the metering rod hanger with the set screw. The Car Craft article had all this yet I seem to have misplaced it! Thanks for any help.

jimbo7074;

I can not seem to find the write up on the T-Q. I have more papers to go through. Years of mags and only 1 T-Q write up. A basic rebuild.
What info is it that you seek? Or is it just the write up itself?

It was just the article itself that I seek, although I would like info on tuning the metering rod hanger screw.

I have been collecting thermoquad articles for about 2 years now and this is the first time that I have heard about a carcraft article. I have a homemade book that is about 2 inchs thick of all the articles that I photocopied, Dodge service manuals, Hotrod etc. and if you are looking for info on the metering tree you will not find it in my book. The most you will find is don't touch it in any factory manual and mag. articles basically are no help either. The greatest source of info is Demonsizzler who visits here regularly. He said that the base setting for a "properly jetted" thermoquad is 1 1/2 turns CW from the bottom. Hold the tree with one hand and screw the adjustment screw all the way ccw until the you feel the tree stops going down. Then slowly turn the screw cw until you feel the tree going up again and give it 1 1/2 turns cw and leave it. Now this assumes that you have the correct rods. Problem is what if you have a 318 and you add a 4 barrel setup with headers and dual exhaust and a warm cam? Well now you will definetly have to increase the amount of gas to get the engine to run good. By rights you will need a new set of rods to get the same quality of off idle, cruise etc. with the 1 1/2 setting. Look at the article from Vaanath and get a feel for factory rods and jets for your application and in the back of the article the measurements are given for the rods. Now you can do a couple of things. Turn the tree more cw until the motor runs better, you can email demonsizzler and buy a set of rods from him that he would recommend or you can make your own out of the set you already have. When I drastically changed my little 318 my car would idle and that was about it. I turned the tree 5 1/2 turns cw from base setting and then it would at least get me down the block and that was it. I measured my rods and they were 70 thou on the first step and looking at the article most 360's had 64 thou about for the same approx. horsepower. I put the rods in a small 3/8 drill that I clamped to the vise and with 180 sand paper and a micrometer I slowly shaved it down to 68 and tried it at the 1 1/2 base setting. I drove it around for a while and it would surge once in a while so I shaved it down another thou and tried it again. I think I ended up at 66 and looking at the article again the second step would also have to be shaved. I took it down 2 thou and left it. I now get 19 mpg in the city and 23 on the freeway and I am pushing around 200 horses. I welded a o2 sensor in the collector and I made sure that I was not lean. I am cheap so to save yourself work contact Demon, he will know that rods you would need as a base setting for a certain setup. Once you are in the ballpark you can play with the tree for best performance.

Thanks for the info! The car craft article had the procedure for the metering rod tree in it , that is why I was looking for it. I lucked out on the rods and jets, as a buddy gave me a strip kit from the 70's.

Hay wait................the best metering tree tuning is DONE on the car as you are driving it.

If you see what is happening at WOT and at cruise THEN you adjust from there.

I will have to do a bit of tuning thats for sure! As long as I am in the ball park at first, as I have to take my car through emissions testing.
