Default Cancer/Smallpox research

The grid is doing distributed computing in an effort to aid in cancer and smallpox research. They use the computers of volunteers to do the computing. Client software is installed on the volunteers computer and then it works on a problem, using idle CPU cycles.

If you are interested in joining the cause, go to the grid, register, and download the client. Once you are registered and have installed the client software, you can join the moparchat.com group that I created.

Come on guys lets bust some diseases.

Default Computer Science Major Here

I was reading about the project in the newspaper and after seeing that we have a moparchat team, I decided to join. My computer is always on anyway, so I'll donate to a good cause. My 1.7GHz and 512MB RDRAM should help out a bit along with the cable modem connection. Thanks for making the team. I joined under the name KingRock. Now if only I could use my idle computer to do body work for me...

Thumbs up Just joined the team

I just signed up for this, it will keep my second processor busy for once. Now, if we could get all the other people on here to sign up, we could shoot to the top of the team list . All hail Moparchat.com.

Matt

P.S. I am curious what kind of systems other people are using this project on. I'll start, it is a dual PIII 1GHz with 1GB PC2100 DDR RAM and 70GB of hard disk on a cable modem.

I'm running a P3 1G CPU with 128M RAM and a dial up modem. This computer is my home computer and is only on, when I am using it.

At work, I am running a 1.8G CPU with 256M RAM and an Ethernet connection with a T1 to the net. I am letting this on run 24X7.

Dang Sbuc72, Ive been in co-locations that had less equipment than that!
Home built AMD XP1700+ w/1028 M SDRAM and an 80 + 40 G AT133 drives with a cable modem, always on, never tires...kinda like my shop lights in the garage..

heh, that is what happens when you work for a company that runs 30 year old mainframes (and you're forced to maintain and admin them), i have this undying desire to find more modern ways of doing things. but yeah, you'd be surprized what you can buy for a few thousand bucks .

Go hard, or go home heh..

Question Curious

Everyone,

Just curious as to what line of work you're all in... I figure it's probably computer related since the systems all seem pretty high end...

-Steve

PS I could use a job when I graduate in less than a year (MS, BS CSC)... hint hint

Default What he said

I am currently a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo hopefully graduating next year with my MS and BS in Computer Science. I also would be looking for a job like Steve here, as a matter of fact we share a room currently and work well as a team, so if you have 2 slots open you will get one heck of a problem solving team . Enough plugging us. I am curious how many of us are in the computer profession. Sorry for the slight misuse of this thread.

Anyway, my system is chugging away at this stuff but we have a ways to go to run down the top dog teams, probably like 15 years worth of computing to go to be a little more exact. More people need to sign up!

As some of you may know, I work for Cox Communications. Please, no cable modem questions! Kidding of course. that is what I do all day, install internet connections (cable, fiber, T1) and telephony services to business'. Ive been involved with computers since 6th grade when I went to an Apple college course. Havent bought a system yet, all home built.

Gripe I know!

I was hoping for a better response also, I have done my part and had my roommates sign up and join the moparchat team (KingRock, MRPoptart) but I don't know where the rest of you live so I can't come bug you until you sign up . Let's go people, it's for a good cause and we can create a moparchat team to clean house against all the other nerd teams . Alright, that's all I got.

Although 9 is better than none, it would be nice to see more of us joining in.

At this point, we have such a late start (about 2 years late), it may be a long time before we crest into the top 5000 (currently we are around 22,000).

At least there is a mopar group that is doing there part. Hopefully there isn't a Chevy or a FORD group ahead of us... lol

I did a quick look and found some brand X groups that are ahead of us. If enough people/CPUs join in, we should be able to pass them.

The Chevy lovers
Ford Escort Owners Association
Pontiac Fiero Owners

Our team moparchat.com

Default Wow

Well, fortunately it looks like the chevy lovers club is within reach but the other two that you found look like they have been doing it for a long time, we will have to get quite a few people to be able to catch up to them in any reasonable amount of time. So, once again, sign up people.

Default Little blue bug thingy

I now have one of those little blue bug thingys in the lower right corner of my computer saying 0% done. I have been a member for all of 5 minutes now.
Thanks for showing me how I can be doing something while I am doing nothing. I tried that "letting my money work for me while I was doing nothing" thing and all that did was cost me 1/2 my life savings. Maybe this is a better deal!

Seriously, my wife is a cancer patient and I am happy to be helping cancer research.
If I have any questions about this UD Agent that has invaded my computer, I hope yall are willing to help me.
Oh, my first question: when the little blue bug thingy says 100% done, will it automatically dialup and send the results, or will I have to push a button or something?

Hey Billy thanks for signing up. I am always connected so I don't know if it will dial up automatically. It could be that you have to dial up and once you do it will do its business. Be sure to go to the team link on the main page and search for moparchat, then be sure to click the join team button. This is of course only if you haven't done it yet. Thanks again.

It will not initiate a dial out. When it has finished processing, it will attempt to contact the UD server. If you are online at that time, it will send out the finished results and pull down a new chunk of data.

If you are not online, when it finishes, it will attempt to connect to the UD server. When it cannot get to the servers, it will display a blinking !. if you mouse over the oval, it will state "unable to connect to UD servers, backing off". Once you connect to the net, you will need to double click on the oval. It will display a message. Click OK. It will then connect to the servers and send out the finished data and get new data.

yeah im surprized that you can't set it to download like 5-10 datachunks at a time, so that you dont have to reconnect everytime you finish one. UD May add that to a future release of the client.
But i never have that problem, as my systems are always connected.

Default Number Krunching

When you say chunk of data, you must mean CHUNK OF DATA. My system has been krunching for 24 hours and has completed only 47% of it's first homework assignment.

Cool It can take a long time

Hey Billy, if you are working on cancer data then yes, my computer, which is pretty high end, takes about 28 to 30 hours to complete the task, the smallpox data takes about 10 to 12 hours to complete one.

yeh on my fastest machine (p3-800mhz) it takes about 40hours to crunch one nugget of data.. So even quick computers take along time to crunch info.

Read the very first post and then follow the link.

What it comes down to is that distributed computing holds a lot more power than a Cray, without the cost of equipment.

United Devices is working with the DOD on Smallpox research and with another group on cancer research. The data that those groups need crunched is being done by individual like you and I. We crunch small amounts of data and give the results back.

Once all of the data has been crunched, then the end results are given back to the original agency. They can then find the agents that need more research and discard what doesn't.

By helping them, we help everyone. The only expense to us is the use of idle CPU time.

Within the next 3 days we will pass the chevy lovers group.

If we can keep cranking them out, we will pass the Fiero owners and the Escort owners in less than 4 months. If we can get more members in our group, then we will pass the others in no time.
