Low/reverse band probably out of adjustment. I would put it in manual low and see if you have engine braking in that range before you pull it. Unless you already have...

You can get a thing called a snap band and replace the band (if it is the problem and is worn out) without removing the transmission.

Damn 5th........if it weren't for BAD luck - you would have NO luck at all ! ....Bummer.

How good is the 2 - 3 shift ?

The prob with that snap band is IF the band is bad the drum is probably hurt. And if you put another band on that hurt drum that new band will not last long.

ANOTHER prob is getting that stock band OUT of the inside of the trans too.....

Right. I would not put a snap band in something that had all the friction material rubbed off of the band and had been running metal to metal, but if the lining is just getting thin and the drum is straight, then I have no problem with a snap band. You are right about the stock band too. It takes a big pair of tinsnips and a lot of forearm effort to cut it in two. I did one on a late model C-6 and my forearms were sore for the rest of the day!

Well, you know, I try. Seriously though, I am not a huge guy and I did it. It took me a while, but I did it. Had a hard time using my hands for the rest of the day, though.

rolleyes2 Time-out

Whoa, there fella's
First off, this 904 is for a 77 Cordoba, not the 5th
Second, if the low reverse band is bad, or out of adjustment, will it not have first gear? cuz it does, it shifts fine through all three.
This really isnt going to be a hot rod, its for my dad and I want it to be reliable, not jerky-da-neck quick shiftin'

First in Drive uses the overrunning clutch to stop the drum, so if the band is cooked, first will still work.

I've seen snap bands for the Ferd before but never a Mopar, and since most low/reverse bands for the 904 are about 1/8" thick cast iron I'd assume it to be pretty damn hard to cut with any size tin snips. Besides that they don't bend either, they'll constrict but bending in or out of the case with the drum installed is going to be out of the question.

Oh and by the way to the original OP, the low reverse servo seal is probably hard as a rock.

Might want to check that band link, or whatever that metal piece is called that pushes on the band from the servo lever. Mine had fallen out!
