Unhappy Shift Points on a 727

I did read the administrators post. I tried to post this in the transmission forum and it wouldn't let me post there.

I was wondering if there is anyway to hold the shift points in the 727 transmission? My transmission shifts way to early in the rpm band. If I nail it to the floor it does a little better but still shifts way to early.

Do a search on throttle pressure linkage or kickdown linkage in the performance chat forum. If this linkage is not set up properly, you will fry the transmission, so check this out soon.

Thanks found all kinds of stuff out. I need to definitely adjust my linkage to the transmission. I do have a 727 manual but pops has it right now along with my spare 727.

the best shot is to get a higher upshift govenor pkg.

you can get these to delay the shifts up to 7,200 or so.

The installation of a quality reprogramming kit will raise the upshift speeds significantly.
If, after the installation of the kit and linkage adjustment, the upshift speeds still fall short of your goal, the governor will have to be modified.

I know I shall adjust the linkage to zero freeplay at full throttle!
What if I overtighten it?
If I set the linkage to be fully engaged (just to be sure!!) at lets say 9/10 of the full throttle!?

Will it cause any damage to the trans, as if I had the valve only engaged halfways caused to freeplay in the link system!

While the transmission can be harmed by running too little throttle pressure, no harm will be done by running it too high, but doing so will usually raise the part throttle upshift speed to uncomfortable levels. If the linkage reaches full back before the carb is wide open, you're cheating yourself of performance.

The problem here originates with the often repeated warning that the transmission lever must be full back at WOT or the trans will be ruined. This is simply untrue, when correctly installed and adjusted, there will be a slight amount of rearward travel left in the lever at WOT. If higher upshift speeds are desired, the lever can be adjusted to where it is full back at WOT but it isn't mandatory.

Thanks guys! I got it adjusted right. What a night and day difference that makes. I wonder how long the 727 will last now? It was that way for about 8,000 miles. Lucky I have a spare. Best be getting on the rebuild for it!

Add a tranny cooler to it, but don't bypass the radiator.

Might as well change your fluid and filter while you're at it.

Yes the secondary cooler can almost be seen in the last picture posted. It reads "Passenger side shot". Look up front under the bumper. Its about 5 feet long. I pulled it off an old 1940's plane. I'll take a good shot of it later. You cant believe it untill you see it.
