Default Best converter for the 440

I want to start off by saying that I am aware this is noy the best way to pick a converter, but the old man does not want to tear down the 440 and see the goodies yet. O.K.. car is a 68 Satellite and it has 391 gears, 906 port and polish heads (mild) and we think a 509 cam. Holley 750 dp headers flows msd etc. The car ran a 13:7 the first time out and only 20* total timing. I have recurved the timing and played with jets using an air fuel meter. We only have a stall converter of 1800-2000 RPM I know this thing will launch harder with a better suited stall, Im thinking a 3000 but want to know some other opinions. Thanks

a mildly moded 10 incher would be the ticket...IMO. about 3500 stall or so.

BUTTT ...you don't want to dump alot of $$$$ into a piece of junk. It is BEST to stick to a brand name piece here that will stand behind their product.

I didn't mean to sound like I was against TCI but they do offer better versions of converters than the "budget" line. TCI can make a good converter along with TA and JW.

Just look at their policies and small-print.

Oo, oo! I know! 1"!

Okay, it's the diameter of the converter. Smaller converters are more efficient at a given stall speed, less heat build up. Smaller also stalls higher.

I've read good things about Dynamic in the Mopar rags. Just ignore that GM pic, there are Mopar pics too. http://www.dynamicconverters.com/home.htm

I'm currently using the Hemi converter that came behind my 383 (RIP). That factory unit was also used with 383 Road Runners and Super Bees, 340's and Hemi's. But when I'm ready to change, I'm calling Dynamic.

TA or TurboAction is located in Jax, FL. They are probably the most experienced Mopar trans builders in the country.

JW Trans is located in the Tampa, FL area. They are pretty good themselves.
