IS a 13.5v voltage regulator a good idea...
for a street/strip car with the battery in the trunk and using a factory output alternator? Thinking of installing electric fuel pump and eventually electric fan(s) and was wondering if this is a good/bad idea?
Thanks, drag-n |

What is the amperage capacity of the battery? What is the amps output of the alt?

Way back when they were adjustable we shot for 13.8 to 14.2V with a charged battery. To me 13.5V is a little low. If the amp draw (not voltage) of your accessories exceeds the rated amperage of the alt you will have problems.

Thats a good question. I must say that I have a similar delima too. I have duel electric fans, Line lock, 2 step, andgoing to have a electric fuel pump soon. Now when I kick on the electric fans you can see the gage shoot up there.....kinda scary. Not to mention tring to run head lights or other stuff. I will be switching to a Chevy 1 wire which really cleans the engine compartment up and very simple to hook up. Autozone sales a 94 amp 1 wire alt for a 84 2wheel drive 1/2 ton pickup. It sales for $69. I will be going this route.

I'm no electonics/electrician so I don't have that much except multimeter, so I don't know my amp draw. Can anyone tell me the output of a standard 3 wire Mopar alternator? Can someone also answer the initial question, assuming I have the correct output to power everything?

Mopar regulators are 13.5 volt regulators, the normal output is 11.5 to 13.5 the constant output is rated at 13.5 volts constant output which is a misnomer because the regulator functions at 13.5 volts when needed and shuts off when there is no demand.

George,
So are you saying they're not worth the money? drag-n |

No my statement was that you should already have a regulator that puts out 13.5 volts or more and they just function differently. The amperage of the alternator will determine how many accessories can be added, most good accessories will function at full capicity with 12 volts some even less.
